Seagate (STX) Q1 FY2027 Earnings: Price-Led Growth Beats Guidance

Summary
Seagate Q1 fiscal 2027 revenue rose 61% to $4.23 billion, above guidance, driven mainly by higher price per exabyte as shipments stayed flat sequentially.
Seagate Technology (STX) reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 results on October 27, 2026, in an 8-K earnings release covering the 13 weeks ended October 2, 2026. Seagate's Q1 fiscal 2027 earnings beat its prior guidance on revenue and cash flow, and the growth came mainly from higher hard drive pricing rather than higher shipments [1]. Revenue was $4.233 billion, up 61% year over year and above the top of the company's earlier $4.0 billion to $4.2 billion guidance range. Estimated revenue per exabyte rose about 33%, while shipped capacity grew about 21% [1][2].
Three questions framed this quarter: how much of the growth came from pricing, whether HAMR cost reductions could support a gross margin of about 57%, and whether profit would turn into cash and further debt reduction. Gross margin met the implied level, but estimated cost per exabyte fell only about 6% year over year and rose from the prior quarter. Cash conversion and deleveraging ran ahead of the earlier baseline, while the diluted share count kept rising. Overall, growth and cash generation were stronger than the baseline, and margin expansion now depends more on pricing.
Seagate is one of the world's main hard drive makers. Its largest customers are cloud service providers and OEMs, which buy under master purchase agreements and longer-term supply commitments [3]. Data center customers accounted for 81% of revenue this quarter [2]. The company uses HAMR (heat-assisted magnetic recording) on its Mozaic platform to raise capacity per drive, which lets it grow shipped capacity, measured in exabytes (EB), while unit volumes stay roughly flat [4].
Revenue beat the top of guidance, driven by price
Most of the first-quarter revenue increase came from higher price per exabyte. Data center revenue was $3.4 billion, up 63% year over year, on shipments of 198 EB, only about 1.5% more than the prior quarter [2]. Data center accounted for 90% of shipments, which implies total shipments of about 220 EB, up about 21% from 181.5 EB a year earlier; the year-ago quarter had 14 weeks. On that basis, revenue per exabyte was about $19.2 million, up about 33% year over year and about 16% from the prior quarter.
Pricing was the main driver of growth this quarter. The 61% revenue increase is roughly the product of 33% price growth and 21% shipment growth, and the 17% sequential increase came almost entirely from price and product mix [2]. Management attributed the price increases to its value-based pricing framework and said they offset rising costs for externally sourced components [2]. Edge IoT revenue rose 52% year over year, slower than data center, so growth did not rely mainly on substitution demand from the flash memory shortage [2].
Higher prices flowed almost directly into gross profit, while faster shipment growth has yet to appear. Cost of revenue rose only 13% year over year [1]. Management said more than 90% of nearline exabyte supply is allocated under long-term agreements through 2028. The CFO said the company is preparing manufacturing capacity for new customer qualifications in the second quarter, which should lift shipments [2]. Seagate guided fiscal second-quarter revenue to $4.8 billion, plus or minus $100 million [1].
Gross margin met the target, but HAMR cost declines slowed
Gross margin met the target, but the cost side contributed less. GAAP gross margin was 57.3%, compared with 39.4% a year earlier; non-GAAP gross margin was 57.8%, and non-GAAP operating margin was 50.7%, in line with guidance of about 50% [1]. Estimated cost of revenue per exabyte was about $8.21 million, down about 6.4% year over year and up about 3.4% from the prior quarter, compared with a decline of about 15% for fiscal 2026 as a whole [5].
Management attributed the margin expansion mainly to pricing power. It said internal media production costs continue to decline, but external component costs have risen, and product transitions also cause temporary scrap and yield losses [2]. Mozaic 4 is ramping with leading cloud customers, but the call summary did not disclose the HAMR share of shipments or restate the year-end target for Mozaic 4 to account for half of HAMR shipments [2]. Management guided fiscal second-quarter non-GAAP operating margin to between 50% and 55% [2].
Cash conversion and debt reduction ran ahead of plan
Profit turned into cash at about the same pace this quarter. Free cash flow was $1.479 billion, a free cash flow margin of about 35%, above about 25.5% for fiscal 2026 [1][6]. Capital expenditures were about 5.0% of revenue, within the 4% to 6% target range, and receivables turned in about 39 days [1].
Debt reduction ran ahead of plan, and cash is starting to shift toward shareholder returns. Seagate repaid about $1.2 billion of principal in the quarter, ending with $2.4 billion of gross debt, then repaid another $750 million after quarter end, bringing gross debt to $1.6 billion [1]. The company repurchased $400 million of shares and paid $168 million in dividends, yet diluted shares were 232 million, still above 229 million for fiscal 2026 [1]. Management plans to return 75% of free cash flow to shareholders starting in the third fiscal quarter [2].
Conclusion
Seagate's growth is currently driven mainly by price, and its profit and cash conversion are stronger than the earlier baseline, but margin expansion now depends more heavily on pricing. Durability depends on whether shipments accelerate in the second quarter with new customer qualifications, whether price increases keep covering higher external component costs, and whether losses from the Mozaic transition stay under control. The view would strengthen if second-quarter revenue lands near the $4.8 billion guidance midpoint with clearly faster shipments; it would weaken if shipments stay flat or cost per exabyte keeps rising. The shipment and unit cost figures are estimates based on the earnings call summary and need to be checked against the quarterly report.
