Summary

Sandisk fiscal Q1 2027 revenue of $11.03 billion and an 85.1% gross margin beat guidance as data center rose 61%, but receivables pushed operating cash flow below profit.

Sandisk (SNDK) fiscal Q1 2027 earnings beat the top of guidance on revenue and gross margin, but operating cash flow fell behind profit. Sandisk reported results for the quarter ended October 2, 2026 in an 8-K release and on its October 29, 2026 earnings call [1][2]. Three questions framed the prior view: whether revenue could meet guidance as price increases slowed, whether long-term agreements could turn data center growth into contracted revenue, and whether profit could become cash for buybacks. The first was confirmed, with about 60% of sequential growth coming from volume [2]. The second remains unproven: data center rose to 43.5% of revenue, but the quarter-end value of signed contracts was not disclosed [3]. The third showed a gap: higher receivables pushed operating cash flow below profit, although free cash flow still covered buybacks [4]. Overall, growth strengthened and shifted toward data center, while cash lagged profit.

Sandisk is a NAND flash memory maker that was spun off from Western Digital and listed in February 2025 [5][6]. It sells data center SSDs to cloud providers and enterprises, Edge storage to PC, phone and car makers, and retail memory cards [7]. All of its flash wafers come from Flash Ventures, its joint venture with Kioxia, which sells them at cost plus a small markup, so most price increases flow through to gross margin [8].

Growth shifted to volume as revenue and margin beat guidance

Revenue and gross margin both beat the top of August guidance. Revenue was $11.03 billion, up 23% sequentially, against guidance of $10.3 billion to $10.8 billion [9][1]. Non-GAAP gross margin was 85.1%, above the 83% to 85% guidance range and the fourth quarter's 84.6% [1].

The source of growth changed. The CFO said about 60% of the sequential increase came from volume and 40% from pricing [2], compared with about two-thirds from pricing in the fourth quarter [10]. On that basis, pricing contributed roughly $830 million of the $2.07 billion increase, a smaller share than in the fourth quarter; the split is management's approximation.

Nearly all of the added shipments went to data center. Data center revenue was $4.80 billion, up 61% sequentially, while Edge grew only 7% and Consumer fell 29% [3]. Management said the low end of the Edge market contracted and that the Consumer market is adjusting to higher prices [2], but did not quantify the effect of shifting supply to data center.

Profit also benefited from this mix shift. Non-GAAP operating margin rose to 80.4% [11]; the revenue and margin gains share the same mix factor. Sandisk guided second-quarter revenue to $12.2 billion to $12.6 billion and said the outlook includes modest price increases [12][13].

Data center is now the main growth source, but its link to long-term agreements needs more disclosure. Its share of revenue rose from 33.2% to 43.5%, and it accounted for about 88% of the revenue increase; the company said it allocated more supply to this market [3][14]. Customer prepayments and deposits rose to $3.13 billion from $2.74 billion at fiscal year-end [15]. The company reiterated that about two-thirds of fiscal 2028 bit output is already committed under long-term agreements [16]. Revenue from signed contracts not yet recognized was $59.8 billion at fiscal year-end [17], but the quarter-end figure was not disclosed, so the increase cannot yet be tied to contracted deliveries.

Higher receivables pushed operating cash flow below profit

Receivables were the main reason operating cash flow fell short of profit. Operating cash flow was $6.36 billion, below non-GAAP net income of $7.62 billion [4][11]. Accounts receivable rose by $1.88 billion, close to the revenue increase, and the CFO said this mostly reflected a change in customer mix [4][18].

One-time inflows that lifted fourth-quarter cash flow shrank. Net inflows from long-term agreement prepayments and deposits dropped from $1.94 billion to $465 million [19]; excluding them, operating cash flow was about 77% of net income. Unpaid income taxes rose to $1.95 billion [15], and the company expects to be subject to the US corporate alternative minimum tax this fiscal year [20].

Inventory did not build up, and free cash flow still covered buybacks. Inventory grew 11.8%, slower than revenue. Sandisk repurchased $5.0 billion of stock in the quarter and paid $755 million of taxes on vested employee stock awards, together less than its $6.31 billion of free cash flow [15][4][19]. Cash rose to $5.14 billion at quarter-end, and the company has no debt [2].

Conclusion

The quarter strengthens the view of Sandisk's growth engine but exposes a cash conversion gap. As the price contribution narrowed, volume and the data center mix took over growth, and operating margin stayed above 80%. Cash generation lagged profit but still funded buybacks.

Durability depends on the second quarter. Receivables may reverse as payments arrive, or persist as large data center customers grow as a share of revenue. Whether second-quarter revenue meets guidance, whether the 10-Q's signed-contract figure shows the data center increase came from contracts, and whether operating cash flow catches up with profit will decide which way these conclusions move.
