Summary

SLB's Q3 2026 revenue rose 5.3% sequentially, above its 3%-4% guide, as Middle East revenue grew 13% and service margins recovered; Q4 Middle East is assumed flat.

SLB's Middle East recovery lifted third-quarter 2026 revenue above the company's own guidance range, and margins in its two service divisions recovered with it. SLB reported results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 in an 8-K earnings release on October 23, 2026 [1]. Going into the quarter, four operating questions mattered: whether the Middle East restart would bring back both revenue and margins, whether Production Systems was improving beyond the ChampionX acquisition, whether data center revenue would keep scaling, and whether Digital's margin depended on one-off exploration data sales. The first two received positive answers. Data center revenue grew 23%, but the segment that reports it earned less because of ramp-up costs on new projects, and Digital held a 28.0% pretax margin while its revenue fell 1% sequentially [1]. The profit improvement is now visible in reported results, but SLB lowered its fourth-quarter Middle East assumption to flat, so the recovery is slower than the company expected a quarter ago [3].

SLB sells drilling, stimulation, completions, artificial lift, subsea production systems, production chemicals and software to oil and gas producers worldwide. Since adding ChampionX in July 2025, production-linked businesses make up a larger share of the company, and SLB also runs a modular data center infrastructure business [1].

Middle East recovery brought back revenue and margins

Middle East revenue returned to growth, and group revenue beat the range SLB had set. In the second quarter, SLB guided to 3% to 4% sequential revenue growth for the third quarter and about 75 basis points of adjusted EBITDA margin expansion [2]. Third-quarter Middle East revenue rose 13% sequentially to an estimated $1.88 billion based on its regional share, up from $1.66 billion in the second quarter. Group revenue was $9.449 billion, up 5.3% sequentially, and adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 71 basis points [1].

Margins recovered faster than revenue. The pretax operating margin of Reservoir Performance, the evaluation and stimulation division, rose to 16.3%, up 140 basis points sequentially. Well Construction, the drilling division, reached 16.4%, up 122 basis points. Both margins are now above their first-quarter levels [1]. SLB attributed both increases mainly to the Middle East recovery [1]. The CFO said SLB had kept people and equipment in place during the disruption, which gave it stronger operating leverage when activity returned [3].

The improvement has not yet restored pre-conflict profitability. Middle East revenue was still 12% lower year on year, and the two divisions' margins were 223 and 239 basis points below the prior year. Some countries were disrupted again in the final weeks of the quarter [1]. For the fourth quarter, SLB assumes Middle East revenue stays flat at about $1.9 billion, below the preliminary $2.1 billion to $2.2 billion it indicated in the second quarter [3]. North America and offshore projects also contributed to the revenue beat.

Production Systems improved beyond the ChampionX acquisition

Production Systems, SLB's largest division, expanded its margin for a second straight quarter, and its legacy product lines are no longer a drag. Third-quarter revenue was $4.00 billion, up 6% sequentially. Pretax operating margin was 16.1%, up 60 basis points sequentially and flat year on year [1]. Working back from nine-month totals, the margin was about 14.1% in the first quarter and 15.5% in the second [4]. Excluding ChampionX, division revenue grew 5% year on year after a 3% decline in the first half. SLB attributed the revenue and margin gains to OneSubsea subsea systems, completions, valves, artificial lift and production chemicals [1].

The acquired and legacy businesses improved together. ChampionX contributed $956 million of revenue and $190 million of pretax income in the third quarter, and its margin expanded sequentially for the fourth quarter in a row [1]. Removing that contribution leaves a legacy margin of at least about 15.0%, above roughly 13.9% in the first half and close to about 15.6% a year earlier. Because the $190 million includes a small amount of Digital profit, this figure is only a floor. Part of the expansion came from the Middle East recovery and overlaps with the previous section. SLB expects OneSubsea bookings to exceed the $9 billion two-year target and guided to high-single-digit sequential revenue growth for the division in the fourth quarter [3].

Conclusion

SLB converted more revenue into profit in both its Middle East service work and its production business. Pretax segment operating income rose $172 million sequentially, an incremental margin of about 36%, but the pretax segment margin remained 153 basis points below the prior year [1]. Free cash flow was $828 million, less than the combined $1.095 billion of buybacks and dividends, and net debt rose to $9.25 billion. The pending Kelvion acquisition also involves about $4.1 billion of cash consideration and assumed debt [1].

The next test is whether margins hold while the Middle East stays flat. If the two service divisions keep their margins and Production Systems keeps expanding in the fourth quarter, the improvement can continue. If margins fall back, the third-quarter gain looks more like a one-time lift from the first quarter of the restart. Profitability in the data center business after its ramp-up, and how much Digital relies on year-end exploration data sales, will also shape that view.
