Summary

GE Vernova's Q3 2026 gas turbine shipments reached about 5 GW at better prices, lifting Power margin to 21.4%; contracts hit 122 GW and free cash flow $5.4 billion.

GE Vernova (GEV) third-quarter 2026 earnings, released on October 28, 2026 in an 8-K press release and on the earnings call, came in above company guidance and confirmed both capacity and pricing in gas turbines [1][2]. Going into the quarter, four questions mattered: whether gas turbine output could rise to about 5 GW per quarter, whether contracting and customer down payments would continue, whether the grid equipment backlog would convert to revenue faster, and whether Wind could get close to breakeven. Gas turbine shipments reached about 5 GW and gigawatts under contract rose to 122 GW [1]. Electrification margins improved while organic growth slowed, and Wind was profitable for the quarter even as its full-year loss guidance widened slightly [1][2]. Growth and profit now come mainly from gas turbine capacity and pricing, while cash comes mainly from customer down payments.

GE Vernova was spun off from General Electric in 2024. It sells gas turbines, grid equipment and wind turbines to utilities, power producers, data centers and grid operators, and its profit base is long-term service on an installed fleet of about 7,000 gas turbines [3]. Customers usually sign slot reservation agreements and pay down payments first, then convert them into firm orders.

Gas turbine shipments reached 5 GW and Power margin rose to 21.4%

Gas turbine shipments reached the planned rate of about 5 GW in the third quarter, up from 3.3 GW in the second quarter [1][4]. The company delivered 32 units, up 60% year over year, including 13 aeroderivatives, which leaves 19 heavy-duty units by arithmetic versus 13 in the second quarter [2][4]. The rebound in heavy-duty units shows that growth did not rely only on aeroderivatives. The exact gigawatts and the HA unit count still await the quarterly report.

Power revenue and margin both came in well above company guidance. Third-quarter Power segment revenue was $6.067 billion, up 25% year over year, and segment EBITDA margin was 21.4%, up 800 basis points [1]. The company had guided third-quarter Power revenue growth of 17%-19% and a margin of 17%-18% [5]. Management attributed the result to delivery volume and favorable price, and said this was the first quarter shipping the better-priced orders signed from the second half of 2024 onward [1][2]. The company raised its full-year Power organic revenue growth and margin guidance to 19%-21% for both [1]. Management expects fourth-quarter price per kW on gas orders to be lower than in the third quarter because of fewer aeroderivatives [2].

Contracting and down payments kept growing, and cash flow guidance rose sharply

Gigawatts under contract rose from 116 GW to 122 GW, and firm orders grew faster than shipments [1][6]. In the quarter the company signed 11 GW of new contracts (8 GW of slot reservations and 3 GW of orders), and converted another 13 GW of reservations into firm orders [1]. Firm orders of about 16 GW far exceeded shipments, and backlog rose from 53 GW to 64 GW, exceeding the reservation balance for the first time [1]. Management said no customers had asked to exit because of financing problems [2].

Cash flow from down payments far exceeded guidance. Third-quarter free cash flow was $5.409 billion, including about $5.3 billion from working capital, mainly down payments [1][2]. The prior full-year guidance implied only about $1.6-$2.6 billion for the second half [5][7]. The company raised full-year free cash flow guidance to $16-$17 billion, which implies about $0.7-$1.7 billion in the fourth quarter, and raised its year-end contracting target to at least 130 GW [1][2]. Down payments are consumed as equipment is delivered, so the third-quarter level cannot be extrapolated.

Electrification margin rose while organic growth slowed from 29% to 16%

Electrification revenue landed within guidance and margin improved, but organic growth slowed. Third-quarter revenue was $3.862 billion against guidance of $3.8-$4.0 billion, and margin was 19.1% versus 18.4% in the second quarter [1][5]. Excluding about $945 million of consolidated Prolec revenue and currency, organic growth was 16%, compared with 29% in the second quarter [1][8].

The visible reason for the slowdown is a higher prior-year base. Based on the published figures, organic revenue in the third quarter of 2025 was about 20% higher than in the second quarter of 2025, while organic revenue this quarter grew about 7% sequentially from the second quarter [1][8]. Book-to-bill was about 1.4, and equipment backlog reached $42.2 billion, up 60% year over year [1]. Management attributed growth to volume in substations, HVDC, switchgear and transformers, did not mention capacity constraints, and did not directly explain the slowdown [1].

Conclusion

This report strengthens the case for the gas turbine business: capacity reached 5 GW per quarter, better-priced orders began shipping, and profit conversion improved markedly [1][2]. Cash generation still relies mainly on down payments. The company ended the quarter with about $16.8 billion in cash, announced a $9 billion acquisition of Trench (expected to close in late 2027) and doubled its share repurchase authorization [1][2]. Wind earned $72 million in the third quarter, but its full-year loss guidance widened to $400-$500 million because maintenance was pulled forward and because of the Vineyard Wind settlement [1][2]. The next tests are whether the fourth quarter sustains shipments of at least 5 GW and a Power margin around 21%, whether contracting reaches 130 GW by year-end, and whether Electrification revenue exceeds $4 billion.
