Summary

FEMSA Q3 2026: OXXO Mexico traffic rose 3.5% and Coca-Cola FEMSA Mexico volume rose 4.2%, but operating margins fell at both, so profit growth lagged revenue.

FEMSA (FMX) third-quarter 2026 earnings, reported on October 28, 2026 in a 6-K results release and on the earnings call, showed stronger demand at its two Mexican engines than in the second quarter, while profit growth still lagged revenue [1][2]. Three questions framed the quarter: whether OXXO Mexico could keep traffic growing after the World Cup, whether Coca-Cola FEMSA Mexico could stabilize volume and margins after the excise tax nearly doubled, and whether Americas & Mobility could recover profit after consolidating OXXO Brazil and absorbing lower fuel margins. Demand improved in the first two businesses, but both operating margins declined; Americas & Mobility profit rose sequentially yet stayed close to breakeven [1]. Overall, the growth engine strengthened, profit conversion has not caught up, and the next tests are a tougher comparison base and higher labor costs in 2027.

FEMSA is a Mexican retail and beverage group that runs about 24,800 OXXO convenience stores in Mexico and owns 47.2% of Coca-Cola FEMSA, which it fully consolidates [1][3]. OXXO earns money from impulse purchases such as drinks, cigarettes, snacks and coffee, plus in-store services, while Coca-Cola FEMSA's revenue depends on volume and price per unit case. In the third quarter, consolidated revenue was Ps. 235.61 billion, up 9.8% year over year, and operating income was Ps. 19.92 billion, up 9.9% [1].

OXXO Mexico traffic accelerated, but operating margin still fell

OXXO Mexico traffic kept accelerating in a quarter with almost no World Cup effect. Traffic grew 2.0% in the second quarter, and management said at the time that about 60% of the uplift came from the World Cup [4][5]. The third quarter had only one Mexico match, in early July, yet traffic rose 3.5%, same-store sales rose 9.2%, and every region grew traffic [1][2]. Average ticket rose 5.5%, mainly because excise taxes on beverages and cigarettes were passed through [1]. Management said warmer weather explained only part of the improvement but did not quantify it [2].

Profit lagged revenue. OXXO Mexico revenue grew 10.3%, while operating income of Ps. 8.04 billion grew only 5.8%, and the operating margin of 9.3% fell 40 basis points year over year [1]. Gross margin fell 120 basis points; the company said that, excluding the high concentration of supplier commercial income in the prior-year quarter, the decline was about 70 basis points, in line with the second quarter [1]. Closing 140 older stores cost about 20 basis points of margin; excluding the closures, operating income grew 8%, and management expects a similar closure impact in the fourth quarter [2].

This result updates the view of OXXO: the traffic gain mainly reflects price and pack adjustments, so revenue growth looks more durable, but price investment, store closures and labor costs still outweighed operating leverage. Management said a 13% minimum wage increase and a shorter workweek in 2027 will likely raise labor as a share of revenue, while savings from the administrative restructuring have only one or two quarters left [2].

Coca-Cola FEMSA Mexico volume and price stabilized, but expenses squeezed margin

Coca-Cola FEMSA Mexico held up better on volume and price after the excise tax increase than in the second quarter. Mexico volume was 538.9 million unit cases in the third quarter, up 4.2% year over year and up 1.0% for the first nine months; the Mexico & Central America division's average price per unit case rose 2.7%, after falling 1.6% in the second quarter [1][6]. Division gross margin rose 150 basis points to 49.0%, mainly on lower sweetener and PET costs and currency appreciation [1].

Division operating income still declined. It was Ps. 6.57 billion, down 3.1% year over year, and the 14.3% operating margin fell 170 basis points, a wider decline than the 110 basis points in the second quarter [1][6]. The company attributed this to higher marketing, depreciation, maintenance and freight expenses, plus an operating foreign-exchange loss versus a gain a year earlier; operating expenses rose from 31.5% to 33.8% of revenue [1]. The constraint on profit has therefore shifted from demand to expenses. Because the division includes Central America, Mexico-only profit is not disclosed.

Conclusion

The third quarter strengthens the view of FEMSA's Mexican demand, and it largely removes the concern that second-quarter improvement depended mainly on the World Cup. Profit conversion remains weak: operating income grew more slowly than revenue at both Mexican businesses, because of price investment and store closures at OXXO and expenses and depreciation at Coca-Cola FEMSA. Americas & Mobility operating income was Ps. 170 million, above Ps. 80 million in the second quarter but below Ps. 281 million in the first quarter, and OXXO Brazil had 641 stores with almost no net additions in the quarter [1][7]. On cash, net debt to EBITDA excluding Coca-Cola FEMSA was 1.19x and capital expenditure fell 28.3%, so cash generation shows no deterioration [1]. The key evidence in the fourth quarter is whether traffic can stay above 2% against a tougher base and colder, rainier weather, and whether margin declines at both businesses narrow.
