Caterpillar (CAT) Q3 2026: Mining Margin Slips Despite Higher Sales

Summary
Caterpillar Q3 2026 Resource Industries sales rose 15%, but higher material costs and ramp inefficiency cut its margin to 13.5%, below last year.
Caterpillar (CAT) reported record third-quarter 2026 results on October 29, 2026, through an 8-K earnings release, dealer retail statistics and its earnings call, but its Resource Industries mining margin slipped below last year even as sales grew [1][2][3]. The quarter ended September 30. Three questions framed the quarter: whether power generation capacity would speed up shipments, whether construction equipment growth came from end demand or dealer restocking, and whether recovering mining orders would lift Resource Industries' margin above last year.
The answers split. Power generation sales rose 30% to $3.421 billion, and shipments kept accelerating [1]. Construction Industries sales rose 18%, while its dealer inventory grew only $300 million, compared with $600 million a year earlier [1][3]. Resource Industries sales rose 15%, but its margin fell to 13.5% from 13.6% [1]. Demand grew in all three segments; the ability to turn that volume into profit did not.
Caterpillar is a leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, engines, gas turbines and locomotives [4]. It sells its machines mainly through independent dealers, 41 in the United States and 109 elsewhere, serving 190 countries [5]. Because dealers buy for inventory, changes in dealer stock can push Caterpillar's reported sales away from end demand for a time. Profit depends mainly on volume, price and manufacturing costs.
Resource Industries grew sales, but its margin fell below last year
Resource Industries' third-quarter margin came in below the prior-year quarter, so higher volume did not produce operating leverage. Segment sales were $4.615 billion, up 15%. Mining, Heavy Construction and Quarry & Aggregates sales rose 22% to $3.697 billion, while Rail fell 5% to $832 million [1]. Segment profit rose only $78 million to $622 million. The 13.5% margin was 0.1 percentage point below the prior-year quarter and 1.4 points below the second quarter's 14.9% [1][6].
Higher manufacturing costs nearly offset the gains from volume and price. Volume added $181 million of profit and price added $96 million, while unfavorable manufacturing costs subtracted $208 million; the company said those costs mainly reflected higher material costs, including tariffs [1]. On the call, management acknowledged operational challenges and inefficiencies as it ramps large mining truck production [3]. Company-wide tariff costs were about $600 million in the quarter, roughly flat year over year, but Caterpillar did not disclose how much of the cost increase came from materials, tariffs or ramp inefficiency [3]. The $616 million of added sales produced $78 million of added profit, an incremental margin of about 13%.
Mining shipments ran ahead of end-user retail sales
Part of Resource Industries' shipments stayed in dealer inventory instead of reaching end customers. Caterpillar said the sales increase in Mining, Heavy Construction and Quarry & Aggregates came primarily from changes in dealer inventories [1]. Retail sales to end users in that business rose only 8%, down from 15% in the second quarter, and total Resource Industries retail sales rose 4% [2]. Management said retail sales were below expectations because of shipping and commissioning delays for mining equipment, and it expects those delays to catch up in the fourth quarter [3].
Demand for mining equipment did not weaken; the problem was delivery timing and cost. Management said Resource Industries had three consecutive quarters of strong orders, driven mainly by copper, gold and the Canadian oil sands [3]. Price realization was slightly better than the company expected, and the company expects a higher segment margin than a year earlier in the fourth quarter [3]. If the commissioning delays do not catch up in the fourth quarter, equipment shipped to dealers in the third quarter could become an inventory burden.
Power generation accelerated and construction growth did not depend on restocking
Power generation and construction equipment results were consistent with earlier expectations. Power generation retail sales rose 75%, the backlog reached $78 billion, and management said capacity remains the main constraint [2][3]. The Power & Energy margin was 24.4%, up 2.5 percentage points from a year earlier [1]. Construction Industries retail sales in North America rose 27%, with a significant contribution from dealer rental fleet loading, and price realization added $349 million [1][2][3]. Caterpillar expects a construction dealer inventory reduction of about $1.6 billion in the fourth quarter [3].
Conclusion
The quarter confirmed that demand is rising in all three segments, while profit conversion diverged. Third-quarter sales and revenues were $20.682 billion, up 17%, and the adjusted operating profit margin was 20.6%, including $128 million of tariff recoveries [1]. Machinery, Power & Energy free cash flow was $3.8 billion in the quarter. In the first nine months, inventories rose $4.118 billion, largely offset by a $4.002 billion increase in customer advances [1][3].
How durable this reading is depends on fourth-quarter evidence. Whether mining retail sales catch up, and whether the Resource Industries margin clearly exceeds the 9.6% of the fourth quarter of 2025, will show whether the third-quarter shortfall was a delivery timing gap or a cost problem [7]. A single-quarter gap of 0.1 percentage point does not by itself prove a weakening margin trend. The construction margin during dealer destocking and the power generation capacity ramp also remain to be tested in the fourth-quarter report.
