Summary

Ambev Q3 2026: Brazil beer cash COGS per hectoliter rose 5.4%, faster than pricing, so segment EBITDA grew only 1.0% while consolidated EBITDA rose 8.9%.

Ambev (ABEV) third-quarter 2026 earnings, reported on October 29, 2026 in a 6-K results press release and on the earnings call, showed the company still growing overall while profit conversion in Brazil beer weakened clearly [1]. Three questions framed the quarter: whether Brazil beer could grow both volume and price after the World Cup, whether unit costs could stay within full-year guidance while gross margin expanded, and whether Brazil non-alcoholic beverage (NAB) volume could stop falling. Brazil beer volume and price both still grew, but unit costs rose faster than pricing and segment profit grew only 1.0%; Brazil NAB volume returned to growth but gave back part of its price and margin [1]. Consolidated Normalized EBITDA grew 8.9%, with most of the gain coming from markets outside Brazil, and operating cash flow remained strong [1].

Ambev is the largest brewer in Latin America by volume, controlled by AB InBev, and it produces and sells beer and non-alcoholic beverages [2]. It sells to bars, supermarkets and small stores, and it makes money mainly from beer volume and net revenue per hectoliter. Brazil beer accounts for about half of revenue and EBITDA, and it was 48.7% of the company's Normalized EBITDA this quarter [1].

Brazil beer unit costs outpaced pricing, and profit growth nearly stopped

Brazil beer unit cost growth picked up again in the third quarter. Cash COGS per hectoliter, excluding non-Ambev products sold on the marketplace, rose 5.4%, above the 4.5% increase in the second quarter [1][3]. The company attributed the increase to commodities and portfolio mix, and management cited aluminum and diesel costs on the call [1][4]. About R$450 million of non-commodity savings in the first nine months offset a meaningful part of the pressure, but the company did not map those savings to the unit-cost line [4].

Because costs rose faster than prices, the second-quarter gross margin expansion did not continue. Net revenue per hectoliter rose only 4.8% in the same period, and Brazil beer gross margin fell 10 basis points year over year, after rising 110 basis points in the second quarter [1][3]. Cash SG&A grew 9.2%, mainly from sales and marketing investment and distribution expenses [1]. As a result, Brazil beer Normalized EBITDA grew only 1.0% organically, and its margin fell 130 basis points [1].

The full-year cost guidance is under pressure, but the company has not changed it. Unit costs rose 8.3% in the first nine months, above the top of the company's 4.5%-7.5% full-year range; the company reiterated the guidance and said it has already hedged its BRL/USD exposure for all of 2027 [1]. The fourth quarter is Brazil's high season, and unit costs must slow clearly for the full year to land inside the range.

Brazil NAB volume recovered, but price and margin gave back gains

Brazil NAB volume returned to growth in the third quarter. Volume rose 3.6%, after a 4.4% decline in the second quarter, even as the company kept exiting a lower-return channel [1][5]. The company estimated that its market share returned to the prior-year level with price relativity versus competitors at historical levels, and net revenue grew 6.3% [1].

The volume recovery came with slower price growth and a narrower margin. Net revenue per hectoliter rose only 2.6%, compared with 6.1% in the second quarter [1][5]. Cash COGS per hectoliter rose 3.4%, distribution expenses lifted cash SG&A by 5.4%, EBITDA grew only 2.6%, and the EBITDA margin fell 100 basis points year over year [1]. Part of the first-half profit expansion came from higher relative prices, and it is hard to keep all of it once share comes back.

Progress: the Brazil beer volume recovery still holds

Weak Brazil beer volume in the quarter mainly reflected the timing of World Cup demand. Shipments rose only 0.5% in the third quarter, below industry growth of about 4%; management explained that World Cup demand was concentrated in late June and that third-quarter industry data also captured part of that demand [1][4]. Across the second and third quarters combined, the industry grew 1.3%, Ambev's shipments (sell-in) grew 2.7%, and consumer sales (sell-out) grew 3.5% [1][4]. Pricing held: net revenue per hectoliter rose 4.8%, and the premium portfolio grew in the high teens [1]. Whether sell-in running below sell-out means retailers reduced inventory is supported only by management's statement that inventory is at the right level [4].

Conclusion

This report shows that Ambev's volume and market share in Brazil are still recovering and its growth engine has not weakened, but profit conversion is lagging revenue. Brazil beer unit costs and expenses both grew faster than pricing, while Brazil NAB traded price for volume; consolidated margin expansion relied on Latin America South, whose EBITDA grew 41.5% [1]. Cash generation was not affected: operating cash flow rose 39% in the first nine months, and the board approved a new buyback of up to 190 million shares [1]. The separate effects of commodities and portfolio mix remain unquantified. Whether fourth-quarter unit costs slow, whether gross margin returns to expansion, and whether NAB price growth gets back above 3% will determine whether this view strengthens.
