WEC Energy (WEC) Q3 2026: $47.5B Capital Plan With No Added Equity

Summary
WEC Energy earned $1.18 per share in Q3 2026, well above guidance, and set a $47.5 billion 2027-2031 capital plan while keeping common equity near $5.5 billion.
WEC Energy Group's third-quarter 2026 earnings beat company guidance by a wide margin, and its new five-year capital plan adds $10 billion of spending without adding new equity. The company reported the results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 in a Form 8-K earnings release and on its October 29, 2026 earnings call [1][2]. Three questions framed the quarter: whether data-center load and earnings would scale, how much construction-period profit was non-cash accounting income and how many new shares the new plan would need, and whether the Chicago gas business could hold its earnings. Data centers widened the gap in sales growth, but the detailed volume and margin figures were not yet disclosed. Chicago gas earnings could not be checked this quarter. The financing question changed the most. Earnings and financing both came in better than expected, but about $0.16 per share came from weather and savings that may be timing-related, and rate decisions and project approvals are still pending.
WEC Energy is a regulated electric and natural gas utility based in Milwaukee. It serves about 4.8 million customers in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota and owns about 60% of the transmission company ATC [3]. Regulators set its rates at cost plus an authorized return. The Wisconsin segment earned $1,054.8 million in 2025 and is the main source of profit [4].
Q3 EPS beat guidance as non-cash AFUDC played a smaller role
Diluted EPS was $1.18 in the third quarter, compared with $0.83 a year earlier. That was $0.20 above the $0.98 top of the company's earlier third-quarter guidance [1][5]. The company then raised and narrowed full-year 2026 guidance from $5.51-$5.61 to $5.60-$5.64 per share [1].
Management said rate-base growth contributed $0.19 of the $0.35 increase. That figure includes $0.15 from AFUDC and cash returns on projects under construction combined, and $0.12 came from projects supported by data-center customers [2]. AFUDC is a return on capital that utilities book as income during construction; it produces no cash in the period. Based on the cash flow statement in the release, third-quarter AFUDC-Equity was about $44.7 million, up about $19.6 million year over year [1]. That is roughly $0.06 per share, or about a fifth of the increase. In the second quarter, $0.09 of a $0.15 increase came from AFUDC [6].
Part of the beat will not repeat. Weather added about $0.08 versus normal and day-to-day O&M savings added $0.08. Management said the O&M benefit came mainly from the stock-based plan and could be timing; another $0.04 came from tax timing [2]. Third-quarter capital spending was about $1,238.8 million, below the year-earlier quarter [1].
WEC adds $10 billion to its capital plan with no added equity
The company set its 2027-2031 capital plan at $47.5 billion, $10 billion more than the prior plan. About $8 billion of the increase is driven by data-center customers. The long-term EPS growth target rose from 7%-8% to 7%-9%+ [2].
The financing structure matters more than the size. The company had previously said about half of any capital beyond the plan would be funded with equity [7], and the prior plan included $5.3-$5.7 billion of common equity [8]. The new plan keeps common equity at about $5.5 billion, alongside $26-$27 billion of cash from operations and about $19 billion of incremental debt [2]. The CFO explained that data-center customers will pay cash returns during construction on more projects, replacing AFUDC the prior plan had assumed. The added cash flow offsets the new equity need [2].
This raises the cash content of earnings and limits dilution. The CFO also said this is a one-time step change: capital added beyond the plan would still need about 40% equity, and the targets depend on project approvals [2].
Data-center demand rises while Chicago gas awaits a final order
Data centers continued to lift electricity sales. Weather-normalized retail electric sales grew 4.1% in the third quarter, but only 0.4% excluding data centers and the iron ore mine [2]. The forecast for new electric demand from 2026 to 2031 rose to 4.9 gigawatts, including 400 megawatts from a new customer that has not yet signed. Oracle has met its financial security obligations [2].
Progress in Chicago gas was mixed. An administrative law judge's proposed order recommends a 9.48% return on equity and a 50% equity ratio for Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, with a final decision expected in December. Management acknowledged that pipe-replacement spending is below plan this year because of labor shortages [2].
Conclusion
The quarter improves the view of WEC Energy's earnings quality and cash generation. Data-center demand expands the growth runway, and cash payments from customers during construction let the new spending proceed without more new shares. About $0.16 per share of weather and timing benefits should not be extrapolated. The next tests are whether full-year results land within guidance, the final rate orders in both states, the 2027 guidance due in December, approval of the transmission line serving the Vantage campus, and the new customer signing.
