Summary

UMC's Q3 2026 utilization rose to 92% and gross margin to 34.0%, but ASP held flat; management now targets a roughly 10% blended ASP increase in 2027.

United Microelectronics (UMC) reported third-quarter 2026 results on October 28, 2026, through a 6-K filing and its earnings call: utilization and gross margin landed as guided, while the blended wafer price only held flat [1][2]. Earlier research on UMC focused on three questions: whether higher utilization could outrun rising depreciation and lift gross margin, whether pricing could stop falling, and whether the company could fund its expansion from its own cash flow. In the quarter, utilization rose to 92% and gross margin to 34.0%, while 22/28nm revenue fell from 37% to about 35% of the total [1][4]. Operating cash flow for the first nine months was well above cash spent on equipment [3]. Taken together, UMC's fabs are now close to full, revenue growth still comes from shipments, and further margin gains depend on pricing. Management gave its first target for 2027: a blended ASP increase of about 10% year over year. That target is not yet realized, and higher raw material costs and depreciation will offset part of it [2].

UMC is a pure-play foundry that manufactures mature and specialty process wafers to customer designs; wafer sales were about 96% of consolidated revenue in the third quarter of 2026 [3]. The company prices per wafer or per die, and most of its costs, such as depreciation, are fixed or semi-fixed, so utilization and price largely determine gross margin [6].

UMC Q3 2026 ASP held flat as 22/28nm share slipped

UMC's blended ASP in US dollars was stable quarter over quarter, in line with the "remain firm" guidance it gave in July [2][5]. Wafer revenue was NT$71.63 billion, up 7.8% sequentially and 25.8% year over year [3]. Wafer shipments rose 7.3% sequentially to more than 1.2 million 12-inch equivalent wafers [1]. Because revenue and shipments grew at similar rates, almost all of the quarter's revenue growth came from volume.

The lower 22/28nm share mainly reflects a denominator effect from the recovery in other process nodes. The share fell from 37% to about 35%, while 22nm reached a record 18.3% of wafer sales [1][4]. A rough calculation from those shares puts 22/28nm revenue at about NT$26.0 billion this quarter, close to about NT$25.4 billion in the second quarter, so the business did not shrink; the recovery in 8-inch and mature-node demand lifted revenue from other nodes. UMC did not disclose the exact share, so this estimate is approximate.

Management targets a roughly 10% blended ASP increase in 2027

Management said blended ASP will move from erosion to uplift in 2027, with a full-year increase of about 10% year over year [2]. The CFO said the figure includes both like-for-like price increases and a richer product mix, and the company does not split the two [2]. Management attributed the increase to stronger demand, tight capacity in selected technologies, and rising raw material and depreciation costs. It said negotiations are at a late stage and that first-quarter ASP guidance will come on the next earnings call [2].

If the target is met, the source of UMC's growth will change. The CEO said 2026 growth was driven mainly by shipments and utilization, while 2027 will rely more on pricing and mix [2]. With most costs fixed, much of any price increase can flow into gross profit. However, the CFO said depreciation will keep rising and gross margin is unlikely to return to the previous peak [2]. Management also noted softer demand in PCs and some other end markets, which could affect pricing talks [2].

Utilization met guidance and cash flow covers expansion

Utilization rose from 85% in the second quarter to 92%, and gross margin rose from 32.5% to 34.0%. Utilization beat the "90%+" guidance, while gross margin sat at the low end of the "mid-30% range" [1][4][5]. Quarterly depreciation was NT$15.97 billion, up 11.9% year over year, slower than revenue growth of 25.6%, so the utilization benefit stayed in gross profit [1][3]. For the fourth quarter, UMC guided to a low-single-digit increase in wafer shipments, a firm ASP, gross margin comparable to the third quarter, and utilization in the low-90% range [1].

Operating cash flow currently covers UMC's expansion spending. Net cash from operating activities was NT$85.69 billion for the first nine months, while cash paid for property, plant and equipment was NT$32.61 billion, roughly flat with a year earlier [3]. UMC kept its 2026 capital expenditure budget at US$2.0 billion; at the current pace, fourth-quarter cash spending would need to accelerate noticeably [1]. The board also approved an additional capital budget of about US$3.2 billion for silicon photonics, silicon capacitor and thin-film lithium niobate modulator capacity, with initial installation in late 2028 and scale by 2030 [1][2]. In October, UMC also issued US$1.8 billion of overseas convertible bonds [3]. The cash and depreciation burden of this spending falls mainly after 2027.

Conclusion

The third-quarter report confirms that UMC's utilization recovery is complete, gross margin is back around 34%, and cash flow can fund its current expansion. Pricing has not yet contributed to revenue growth, and with fabs near full, the next step for growth and margin depends on whether 2027 price increases take hold. The roughly 10% figure is a management target; the company has not disclosed the split between price and mix or the annual schedule for the new budget. Whether fourth-quarter ASP holds, whether first-quarter 2027 guidance shows a price increase, and how full-year cash spending compares with the budget will determine whether this view strengthens or weakens.
