Summary

Twilio Q3 2026 non-GAAP operating income of $325.7 million beat guidance by about 10% as gross margin excluding carrier pass-through fees rose 80 basis points.

Twilio's Q3 2026 earnings showed that its falling reported margin is an accounting effect of carrier fee pass-through: excluding those fees, non-GAAP gross margin rose 80 basis points, and non-GAAP operating income beat the top of guidance by about 10%. Twilio reported results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 on October 29, 2026 through an 8-K press release and an earnings call, and profit and cash flow came in well ahead of the company's prior guidance [1][2].

Before the quarter, three questions mattered most: whether organic revenue growth could clearly exceed the 11%-12% guidance, whether voice and software add-ons could keep lifting gross profit, and whether gross margin was still improving after stripping out U.S. carrier pass-through fees while operating income beat guidance by a clear margin [4]. Organic revenue grew 16%, voice and add-on growth held up, and gross margin excluding pass-through fees kept improving [1][2]. Taken together, the profit thesis was confirmed and growth continued without accelerating further. Part of the gap between gross profit growth and revenue growth came from cost tailwinds such as moving email to the cloud, and the company has guided Q4 profit below Q3 [1][2].

Twilio sells messaging, voice, email and identity verification APIs to developers at businesses ranging from small companies to large enterprises; messaging made up about 57% of 2025 revenue [3]. Most revenue is billed per message sent or per call minute, and Twilio pays carriers for network access, which keeps gross margin around 49% [3]. Higher U.S. carrier messaging fees introduced from June 2025 are passed through to customers at cost, so revenue and cost of revenue rise by the same amount while gross profit dollars do not change [3].

Carrier fee pass-through explains the lower margin

Twilio's Q3 non-GAAP gross margin was 49.2%, down 90 basis points year over year, and the entire decline came from $53 million of incremental carrier fees [1][2]. Management said that, excluding these fees, gross margin rose 80 basis points year over year, up from a 60 basis point improvement in Q2 [2][5]. The lower reported margin therefore reflects accounting dilution, and the underlying gross profit mix kept improving. Messaging organic growth excluding the fees was 17%, which shows no usage loss caused by the higher fees [2].

Operating income beat guidance by a wide margin because gross profit grew faster than expenses. Non-GAAP income from operations was $325.7 million, up 39% year over year and about 10% above the top of the $285-$295 million guidance range [1][4]. Based on press release figures, non-GAAP gross profit rose about $116 million, or about 18%, while non-GAAP operating expenses grew only about 6%; stock-based compensation fell from 12.2% to 9.9% of revenue [1]. About $11 million of the result came from platform credits that were higher than expected; excluding them, operating income was still about 7% above the top of guidance [2].

Cash generation improved alongside profit, and the full-year profit and cash outlook both moved up. Q3 free cash flow was $369.6 million, compared with $247.5 million a year earlier [1]. Twilio raised its 2026 non-GAAP income from operations and free cash flow guidance to $1.19-$1.20 billion each, from $1.135-$1.155 billion, and gave a preliminary 2027 outlook of at least $1.35 billion for both [1][2].

Organic growth continued, with a more normal beat

Revenue growth held up on a higher comparison base but did not accelerate further. Q3 revenue was $1.56 billion, up 20% year over year; organic growth was 16%, which the CFO said was about four points above the high end of guidance and within the usual range of recent years [1][2]. The dollar-based net expansion rate was 114%, with about four points coming from pass-through fees [1][2]. Messaging organic growth slowed from 18% in Q2 to 17%, which the CFO attributed to tougher year-earlier comparisons at some ISV customers [2]. Twilio raised its full-year organic growth outlook to 15% and gave a preliminary 2027 outlook of at least 10% [1][2].

Voice and software add-ons kept growing quickly, but the durability of faster gross profit growth is not yet proven. Voice revenue grew more than 20%, software add-ons grew more than 25%, and non-GAAP gross profit grew 18%, faster than organic revenue [1][2]. Management attributed gross profit growth to higher-margin products and platform cost efficiencies, and said the benefit from moving email from on-premises infrastructure to the cloud is now in the run rate [2]. As a result, the company guided Q4 and 2027 gross profit growth to be similar to organic revenue growth [1][2].

Conclusion

The quarter confirmed Twilio's ability to convert growth into profit: gross margin excluding pass-through fees kept improving, operating income and free cash flow both beat guidance by wide margins, and full-year guidance rose [1][2]. Growth remained above company expectations, but the size of the beat returned to normal and the messaging slowdown came from tough ISV comparisons [2]. The main caveat is on the cost side: the platform credits and the email cloud migration benefit will not repeat, and the company guided Q4 non-GAAP income from operations to $300-$310 million, below Q3 [1][2]. The next quarter will test whether gross margin excluding fees keeps improving once those factors are gone, whether operating income still clearly beats guidance, and whether organic growth clearly exceeds the 11%-12% guidance [1].
