Trane Technologies (TT) Q3 2026 Earnings: 16% Organic Growth, Margin Down

Summary
Trane Technologies (TT) grew Q3 2026 organic revenue 16.2% versus about 10% guidance and lifted backlog to $12.5 billion, but adjusted operating margin fell 40 bps.
Trane Technologies (TT) Q3 2026 earnings showed revenue growing much faster than guidance while margins moved the wrong way. The company released its third-quarter results for the period ended September 30 in a news release and its 10-Q on October 29, 2026 [1][2]. Coming into the quarter, three questions mattered: whether the record backlog would lift organic revenue growth to about 10%, whether adjusted operating margin would expand about 50 basis points with adjusted EPS near $4.70, and whether margins in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), hurt by the Middle East conflict, would stop falling [3]. Organic revenue grew 16.2% and backlog reached $12.5 billion, but adjusted operating margin fell 40 basis points year over year; EMEA revenue returned to growth and its margin decline narrowed [1][2]. Overall, growth beat expectations and profit conversion fell short of plan.
Trane Technologies sells heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) and transport refrigeration under the Trane and Thermo King brands [4]. Its customers are mainly commercial project owners such as data centers, schools and hospitals, plus residential buyers reached through distributors [5]. The company earns money from equipment and services; services are about one-third of revenue, and the Americas segment contributes more than 80% of revenue [6][1].
Backlog Is Converting to Revenue Faster Than Guided
Enterprise organic revenue rose 16.2% in the quarter, well above the roughly 10% guidance the company gave in July [2][3]. Volume contributed 15.7 percentage points and price only 0.5 points; Americas organic revenue grew 19.1% [2].
Shipments of applied commercial equipment, which is engineered for specific projects, drove most of the growth. Management said applied revenue grew more than 60%, Americas Commercial HVAC organic revenue rose in the low 20s percent, and residential grew about 20% [6]. Because Commercial HVAC itself grew more than 20%, the acceleration did not rely only on an easy residential comparison, although the company did not disclose enough to split each business's contribution precisely.
The order book is stretching further out even as new-order growth slows. Backlog at quarter end was $12.5 billion, up 73%, with more than $8 billion scheduled for 2027 and beyond [1][6]. Americas organic bookings grew 16%, well below 43% in the second quarter [1][7]. Management attributed the slowdown to lumpy data center orders and said the number of large projects it tracks rose to 1,700 [6]; the quarter's data cannot yet separate lumpiness from a peak in demand. The company raised its full-year organic revenue guidance from about 9% to about 11% [1][3].
Margins Moved Opposite to Guidance
Adjusted operating margin was 20.2%, down 40 basis points year over year, against prior company guidance for about 50 basis points of expansion [1][3]. Gross margin fell 160 basis points to 35.3%, mainly because of inflation and investments [2].
Management attributed the margin pressure to price, supply chain and inflation [6]. Price was light because much stronger residential volume brought more channel incentives and because large transport fleet customers buy at lower prices [2][6]. In August a capacitor supplier was added to the US forced-labor import ban list, causing component shortages and factory rework; management said the issue has been resolved, and it said inflation across materials and components ran above its expectations from earlier in the year [6].
Segment results show the pressure was not in the Americas. Americas margin rose 50 basis points while EMEA and Asia Pacific fell 250 and 390 basis points, and adjusted corporate expense increased from $58.1 million to $89.9 million [1]. By simple arithmetic, the combined margin of the three segments was roughly flat with last year, so the enterprise decline mostly reflects higher corporate expense, which the company did not explain.
The EPS beat does not signal better margins. Adjusted EPS was $4.86, up 25% and above guidance of about $4.70 [1][3]. About $0.10 came from a tax-timing benefit; excluding it, growth was about 23% [6]. The company reaffirmed full-year adjusted EPS guidance of $15.20 to $15.30 and expects fourth-quarter price contribution to recover to about 1.5 points [1][6].
EMEA Revenue Returns to Growth as the Margin Decline Narrows
EMEA revenue and orders improved, but its margin has not stopped falling. Segment organic revenue grew 2.0% after falling about 4% in the second quarter; adjusted operating margin was 17.2%, down 250 basis points, a smaller decline than the 420 basis points in the second quarter [2][1][8]. Organic bookings rose 41%, and excluding the Middle East they rose more than 50% [1][6]. Management said more than 80% of the roughly $18 million decline in operating income came from the Middle East conflict, but it did not disclose the Middle East revenue decline [6].
Conclusion
The quarter strengthens the growth case: backlog is turning into revenue quickly and now extends beyond 2027. Profit conversion is weaker than planned, and price is still not keeping up with inflation. Cash generation improved, with year-to-date free cash flow of $2.83 billion, up about 58% [1], though part of the gain came from lower working capital and the timing of customer down payments [2]. The next tests are whether fourth-quarter pricing recovers enough to expand margins again and whether the slowdown in Americas orders proves to be only lumpiness in large orders.
