PayPal (PYPL) Q3 2026 Earnings: Costs Up Just 1.5%, EPS Beats Guidance

Summary
PayPal's Q3 2026 non-GAAP operating costs rose only 1.5% and EPS grew 8% against guidance for a decline, but PayPal-branded revenue fell about $240 million.
PayPal's Q3 2026 earnings beat the company's profit guidance as costs barely grew, while revenue growth kept slowing. PayPal reported results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 on October 27, 2026 in an 8-K earnings release and its 10-Q [1][2].
Four operating questions framed the quarter: whether cost savings would outrun reinvestment, whether Braintree volume would keep diluting transaction margin, whether spending on branded checkout would buy volume, and whether credit quality in financial services was holding. Non-GAAP non-transaction expense rose only 1.5% and non-GAAP EPS grew 8%. Transaction margin recovered, but mainly because losses fell. Revenue from PayPal products fell about $240 million year over year. Financial services kept growing faster, and the decline in credit losses still relied on a reserve release, so that earlier view is unchanged [1][2]. Overall, profit conversion strengthened and revenue growth stayed weak; EPS growth came mainly from buybacks, and net income still fell.
PayPal runs a two-sided payments network that connects consumers and merchants, with 439 million active accounts at the end of 2025 [5]. It earns most of its revenue from fees on payment volume. Branded checkout, where a shopper chooses the PayPal button on a merchant's checkout page, carries the highest fee rate. Braintree processes card payments for large enterprises at a lower fee rate.
Cost growth fell to 1.5% and EPS beat guidance
PayPal's Q3 cost growth came in far below the high-single-digit growth the company guided in July [3]. Non-GAAP non-transaction expense was $2.337 billion, compared with $2.303 billion a year earlier [1]. The company has cut more than 2,000 jobs [4]. Non-GAAP operating income rose 3% to $1.613 billion, and non-GAAP operating margin expanded 16 basis points to 18.8%. Non-GAAP EPS was $1.45, up 8%, while the company had guided to a low-single-digit decline [1].
Most of the EPS gain came from buybacks. Non-GAAP net income was $1.245 billion, down 3%; the non-GAAP effective tax rate rose to 21.6% from 18.1%, while diluted shares fell to 858 million from 960 million [1]. GAAP operating income fell 8% because the quarter included $178 million of restructuring charges [1]. The Q3 workforce reduction plan alone cost $152 million, already above the $120-$140 million transformation charge PayPal projected in July for the second half; PayPal expects the plan to save about $340 million a year [2][6].
PayPal also raised its savings target and full-year outlook. The run-rate savings target for the exit of Q4 2026 rose to more than $700 million from $400 million, and full-year non-GAAP EPS guidance rose to about $5.60 [1][4][6]. The CFO cautioned that second-half operating expense should not be run-rated into 2027, because investment will increase next year [4].
Transaction margin recovered on lower losses
Transaction margin dollars reached the improvement that had been expected. Transaction margin dollars equal net revenue minus transaction expense and losses; excluding interest on customer balances, they were $3.661 billion, up 3%. Transaction margin was 46.0%, up from 44.9% in Q2 [1]. The transaction expense rate fell to 0.87% from 0.89% [2].
Almost all of that gain came from lower losses. Transaction and credit losses fell $97 million year over year, helped by lower fraud, better risk controls and a $45 million credit reserve release [2]. Based on the disclosed figures, net revenue minus transaction expense was about $18 million lower than a year earlier, and that figure includes about $70 million of hedging gains [1][2]. Unbranded processing volume grew only 8%, compared with 13% in Q2, which eased the dilution from lower-margin business; total payment volume growth also slowed to 6% from 10% [1][4][7].
PayPal-branded revenue declines widened
The decline in PayPal products transaction revenue widened in Q3. It fell about $240 million year over year, compared with about $130 million in Q2. PayPal cited unfavorable product and geographic mix, co-marketing incentives with large merchants, and lower foreign exchange fees [2][8].
Branded checkout volume held steady. The CEO said online branded checkout growth has stayed in a 1%-2% range for four quarters; the exact Q3 figure was not disclosed. The removal of the EU de minimis exemption cut branded checkout growth by about 70 basis points and will continue into Q4, and active accounts rose by 1.6 million from the prior quarter [1][4]. Falling revenue in the highest-fee business held net revenue growth to 2%, an effect masked this quarter by the lower expense rate and lower losses [1].
Conclusion
The quarter strengthens the view of PayPal's profit conversion and weakens the view of its revenue growth. Operating income returned to growth, Q3 adjusted free cash flow was $2.047 billion, and PayPal raised its full-year guidance to at least $6.5 billion [1][4]. The improvement in transaction margin relied on lower losses and a one-time reserve release, and branded checkout revenue is still eroding [2]. The next tests are whether Q4 operating expense matches PayPal's flat to low-single-digit growth guidance, whether transaction margin dollars can grow once losses stop falling, and whether the decline in PayPal products revenue narrows [4].
