Linde (LIN) Q3 2026 earnings: Lincare charges, stronger cash flow

Summary
Linde beat Q3 2026 EPS guidance at $4.59, moved Lincare out of the Americas segment after $183 million of related charges, and lifted free cash flow to $1.777 billion.
Linde (LIN) third-quarter 2026 earnings, reported on October 29, 2026 in an 8-K release, the 10-Q and the earnings call, beat adjusted EPS guidance and showed much stronger cash flow, while the U.S. homecare business Lincare kept deteriorating [1]. Four questions framed the quarter: could start-ups keep adding about 2 points of volume, could the Americas margin recover from 31.2%, could European volumes stop falling, and could cash flow keep up with higher capex [2]? Volume grew 2%, roughly half from start-ups [3]. Europe reported 1% volume growth, but management said it was flat excluding equipment sales [4][5]. The larger changes came on the last two: Lincare left the Americas segment with charges taken, and free cash flow more than doubled from the second quarter. The core gases business improved on pricing and start-ups; the drag sits in Lincare, whose restructuring has not yet reached profit.
Linde, the largest industrial gases company, separates oxygen, nitrogen and argon from air and sells gases such as hydrogen and helium [6]. It supplies industrial and healthcare customers by pipeline, liquid delivery and cylinders, earning mainly from long-term contracts, pricing and start-ups.
Lincare leaves the Americas segment
Linde moved the U.S. homecare business from Americas into Other this quarter and recast prior periods [7]. On that basis the Americas margin was 35.1%, up 50 basis points [8]. Because it excludes Lincare, it is not comparable with the 31.2% second-quarter margin. Americas pricing added 6% [9]; the CFO said close to 2 points was recovery of earlier energy and distribution costs, leaving about 4% underlying [10].
Lincare is still dragging on profit. Operating profit in Other fell 32% to $42 million, which Linde attributed to homecare [11]. Linde recorded $425 million of cost reduction and other charges, including $183 million of non-cash charges primarily related to homecare and $200 million of global severance [12]. The CFO estimated Lincare has cost about 2 points of EPS growth this year [13]. Linde is evaluating strategic options but cannot assure one exists [14].
Adjusted EPS was $4.59, up 9% and above the $4.45-$4.55 guidance range [1]. About 1% came from a one-time contract true-up in equity income [15]. The adjusted operating margin was 29.4%, flat excluding cost pass-through. Linde guided fourth-quarter adjusted EPS to $4.40-$4.50 and the full year to $17.82-$17.92 [16], with no meaningful Lincare improvement embedded [17]. Restructuring savings begin in the fourth quarter and reach full run rate in the second half of 2027; the amount was not disclosed [18].
Cash flow catches up with capex
Third-quarter cash flow eased first-half concerns. Free cash flow was $833 million in the second quarter [19]. In the third quarter, operating cash flow rose 8% to $3.169 billion and, after $1.392 billion of capex, free cash flow was $1.777 billion [1]. Nine-month operating cash flow rose 5% to $7.680 billion, faster than in the first half [20]. Management noted that tax, interest and incentive timing lifts second-half cash flow [21].
Working capital absorbed $775 million over nine months, less than $989 million in the first half [22]. Nine-month capex was $4.172 billion [23], and full-year guidance of $5.5 billion to $6.0 billion was unchanged [16]. Debt rose a net $504 million over nine months [24], implying a net repayment of about $1.1 billion in the third quarter based on the first-half figure. Operating cash funded third-quarter dividends and buybacks, though that does not prove returns on new projects.
Conclusion
Growth still comes from pricing and start-ups, core gases profit conversion is improving, and cash generation again matches investment. The main uncertainty is Lincare: charges are taken and the CFO oversees it directly, but the profit recovery and any sale remain unknown. For the fourth quarter, the tests are whether the Americas margin holds near 35% as cost recovery fades, whether profit in Other stabilizes, and whether full-year operating cash flow exceeds 2025. Whether year-end backlog returns to about $8 billion is also unconfirmed [23].
