Summary

GE HealthCare lifted its Q3 2026 adjusted EBIT margin to 16.6%, returned Patient Care to profit and raised full-year guidance, while orders growth slowed to 4.0%.

GE HealthCare (GEHC) third-quarter 2026 earnings, released on October 28, 2026 in a Form 8-K earnings release and on the earnings call for the quarter ended September 30, showed margins and cash flow ahead of prior benchmarks, and the company raised its full-year guidance [1][2]. Four questions framed the quarter: whether margins and cash flow could ramp in the second half, whether Patient Care Solutions could restore shipments, whether Pharmaceutical Diagnostics could sustain its high growth, and whether Advanced Imaging orders would convert into revenue. The first three received positive answers. Adjusted EBIT margin expanded 180 basis points year over year, Patient Care returned to profit, and Pharmaceutical Diagnostics still grew 13.8% organically without a catch-up effect [1]. Advanced Imaging grew 4.5% organically with better margins but no acceleration, while company organic orders growth slowed from 11.1% in the second quarter to 4.0% [1][3]. Profit conversion clearly strengthened this quarter. Still unproven are the nature of the orders slowdown and whether margins can keep expanding in 2027 once tariff refunds end, memory-chip costs rise and generic contrast media enter the market.

GE HealthCare was spun off from General Electric in 2023 and sells imaging, ultrasound, patient monitoring and anesthesia equipment, contrast media, tracers, and software and services to hospitals, imaging centers and outpatient networks [4]. Advanced Imaging Solutions generates about 70% of revenue from equipment plus service and software revenue on the installed base. Pharmaceutical Diagnostics earns per-scan dose revenue at margins of about 30%. The company is still evaluating strategic options, including a sale, for Patient Care Solutions [1][2].

Margins ramped early and full-year guidance rose

Third-quarter margin already exceeded the full-year guidance range. Adjusted EBIT, which excludes restructuring, acquisition-related and similar items, was $913 million, a 16.6% margin, above 14.8% a year earlier and 14.2% in the second quarter [1][3]. Adjusted EPS was $1.34, up 25.1%. The adjusted tax rate did not fall, so the growth came from operating profit [1].

The company attributed the expansion to volume, price, cost productivity and lower tariffs, partly offset by higher memory-chip and oil costs [1][2]. Segment EBIT rose about $155 million in total: roughly $81 million from Advanced Imaging, $41 million from Patient Care and $33 million from Pharmaceutical Diagnostics [1]. Management said price and cost actions offset some, but not all, of the major cost increases, and the roughly $250 million full-year inflation assumption was not updated this quarter [2][5].

Cash flow improved alongside profit. Third-quarter free cash flow was $793 million, up $310 million year over year, including a $55 million tariff refund, with collection timing also helping [1][2]. The company raised full-year guidance to free cash flow above $1.6 billion, adjusted EBIT margin of 15.5% to 15.7%, and adjusted EPS of $4.95 to $5.05 [1]. Inventories rose $430 million in the first nine months, so working capital still absorbs a large amount of cash [1].

Patient Care deliveries recovered and the segment is profitable again

Patient Care revenue rose from $675 million in the second quarter to $793 million, up 8.8% organically. Segment EBIT was $68 million, an 8.6% margin, compared with a $26 million loss in the second quarter [1][3].

Management attributed the recovery to two factors: some monitoring installations moved into the second half as planned, and supplier and factory issues were resolved after the team moved to daily tracking, with backlog growing alongside revenue [2]. This supports the earlier view that the parts shortage was a delivery bottleneck, but the company did not quantify each factor or disclose the product-line split. Because the fourth quarter of 2025 included about $45 million of revenue from the release of a product hold, management expects muted year-over-year growth in the fourth quarter, with revenue still growing sequentially [2].

Pharmaceutical Diagnostics growth held without a catch-up effect

Pharmaceutical Diagnostics grew 13.8% organically in the third quarter, close to 14.6% in the second quarter, with a 29.9% segment margin [1][3]. The quarter had no catch-up shipments after the first-quarter supplier issue, so the second-quarter strength reflected sustained volume and price growth. Weekly doses of Flyrcado, the cardiac PET tracer, reached about 680 in the week ending October 23, compared with 545 in July [2][5].

This conclusion has limits. The company does not disclose the price contribution. A competitor plans to launch generic Omnipaque contrast media next year; management believes the entrant will mainly fill unmet demand and reported no price impact this quarter [2]. GE HealthCare plans to acquire SOFIE Biosciences for $945 million in cash, with closing expected in the first half of 2027, and the added revenue will be an acquisition contribution [1].

Conclusion

This report moves the central question from whether margins can ramp to whether the improvement can last. Profit conversion and cash generation have been delivered. The growth engine remains uncertain: Advanced Imaging did not accelerate, and orders growth slowed to 4.0%, which management attributed to large deals shifting between quarters and a tough prior-year comparison [2]. Fourth-quarter orders, Patient Care margins against a high prior-year base, and margins under 2027 tariff and chip costs will determine whether the improvement continues.
