Enterprise Products (EPD) Q3 2026 Earnings: Crude Spreads Fade, Volumes Hit Records

Summary
Enterprise Products Q3 2026 gross operating margin rose 15% to $2.735 billion, but crude marketing spreads reversed while Permian fee-based volumes set records.
Enterprise Products Partners (EPD) third-quarter 2026 earnings show the crude oil marketing spreads from the second quarter have been given back, while fee-based volumes kept setting records. In its 8-K earnings release on October 29, 2026, the partnership reported total gross operating margin of $2.735 billion for the third quarter of 2026, up 15% from a year earlier [1].
The release answers four questions raised after the second quarter: how much of the marketing-spread gain would reverse, whether Permian processing volumes could fill new fractionation capacity, whether export dock volumes could outrun lower loading fees, and whether cash could fund both buybacks and leverage near 3x after the growth capex increase. Spreads moved the most. Total gross operating margin was $256 million lower than in the second quarter [1][2]. Processing and fractionation volumes reached new highs, NGL dock volumes rose sharply from a year earlier, and buybacks and leverage held. Taken together, the main growth engine is again the volume moving through processing, pipelines and export docks, and the spread income looks like an add-on that can reverse.
Enterprise is one of the largest publicly traded midstream partnerships in the US. Its pipelines, storage and Gulf Coast marine terminals move natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGLs such as ethane and propane) and crude oil from basins such as the Permian to domestic chemical customers and overseas buyers [3]. Most of its profit comes from fee-based processing, transportation, fractionation and loading, and its marketing arm also earns spreads using its own assets.
Crude spreads reversed while NGL marketing held
Excluding unrealized hedging gains and losses, gross operating margin fell about $110 million from the second quarter. Mark-to-market (MTM) results moved from +$129 million in the second quarter to −$13 million [4][1]. Without MTM, gross operating margin declined from about $2.862 billion to about $2.748 billion.
The crude oil segment gave back the most. Crude Oil Pipelines & Services gross operating margin was $367 million, compared with $485 million in the second quarter and $371 million a year earlier [1][2]. Enterprise attributed a $14 million year-over-year decline in its Texas crude oil pipelines, terminals and marketing to higher operating costs, and crude oil marine terminal volumes fell to 926 thousand barrels per day (MBPD) [1].
Most of the sequential decline in the natural gas segment came from MTM. Natural Gas Pipelines & Services gross operating margin fell from $556 million to $411 million, while segment MTM swung from +$89 million to −$26 million [2][4][1]. Excluding MTM, the segment earned about $437 million, about $30 million less than in the second quarter and still above the prior-year quarter.
NGL marketing kept most of its spread gains. Gross operating margin from natural gas processing and related NGL marketing was $488 million. Enterprise attributed a $75 million year-over-year increase in NGL marketing to marketing strategies tied to its export and processing assets [1]. Management said that without the spreads created by geopolitical conflict, 2027 growth would be more modest than 2026, and it gave no figure [5].
Permian fee-based volumes accelerated
Upstream supply accelerated in the third quarter. Permian processing plant inlet volumes reached 4.6 Bcf/d, up 12%; fee-based natural gas processing volumes were 8,196 MMcf/d; NGL fractionation volumes were 1,890 MBPD; and NGL pipeline volumes were 4,978 MBPD [1]. Management said part of the increase was the return of production shut in during the second quarter [5].
NGL fractionation gross operating margin was $262 million, up $59 million from a year earlier, which the company attributed to its new Frac 14 fractionator [1]. Enterprise also raised its 2025-2030 forecast for Permian wet gas and NGL production growth from 23% to 34% [5].
Export dock volumes turned into margin
Higher export dock volumes translated into higher margin in the third quarter. NGL marine terminal volumes were 1,196 MBPD, up 288 MBPD from a year earlier. Gross operating margin from the NGL pipelines and storage business was $785 million, up 5.2%, and the company attributed a $21 million increase at its export terminals to higher export volumes [1]. A roughly 300 MBPD LPG export terminal expansion is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter, and management said the capacity is fully contracted [1][5].
Cash covered both growth projects and buybacks
The higher capital budget did not squeeze unitholder returns. Operational distributable cash flow was $2.311 billion, covering distributions 1.9 times, and it included $100 million collected on receivables tied to income from a prior period [1]. Growth capital spending was about $0.9 billion, unit buybacks were $112 million, and Enterprise kept its 2026 net growth capital range of $2.9 billion to $3.4 billion [1]. Leverage fell to 2.9 times, and management said 2027 growth capital spending is still expected around $3 billion [5].
Conclusion
The second-quarter earnings surge had two layers. Crude oil marketing spreads have reversed and NGL marketing spreads have held for now, while Permian fee-based volumes kept accelerating, so gross operating margin still grew 15% from a year earlier despite the sequential decline. Cash funded growth projects, buybacks and leverage below 3 times, although it included a $100 million one-time collection. The next tests are whether the LPG export expansion and the Athena processing plant add volume right away, whether NGL marketing spreads last after the conflict premium fades, and whether 2027 capital spending rises with the Permian forecast. The detailed drivers of loading fees and fractionation margin will be available only when the 10-Q is filed.
