Chipotle (CMG) Q3 2026: Price Drives Comps as Check Mix Drag Widens

Summary
Chipotle's Q3 2026 comps rose 2.1% with a third straight quarter of positive traffic, but a 1.4-point check-mix drag absorbed most pricing and Q4 traffic is guided flat.
Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) reported third-quarter 2026 results (quarter ended September 30) on October 28, 2026, through its 8-K earnings release and conference call. Chipotle's Q3 2026 traffic stayed positive, but growth now leans more heavily on menu price increases[1]. Transactions rose 0.8% and comparable restaurant sales rose 2.1%, ahead of the roughly 1% guidance the company gave in July[1][2]. The drag from check mix widened sharply, however, and the company guided fourth-quarter transactions to roughly flat[3].
Going into the quarter, three questions mattered: whether traffic could stay positive through an industry food-safety scare, whether price increases could stop restaurant margins from falling, and whether the second-half opening ramp could coexist with buybacks that exceeded free cash flow. The margin decline narrowed and openings stayed on plan, while buybacks slowed temporarily because of a period when the company could not trade.
Chipotle is the largest US fast-casual Mexican restaurant chain and owns and operates every restaurant in the US, Canada and Europe, with 4,267 company-owned restaurants as of September 30[1]. Nearly all revenue comes from restaurant food sales. Growth comes from comparable sales at existing restaurants and roughly 350 new restaurants a year, and comparable sales split into transactions and average check[1].
Faster pricing, smaller checks
Average check rose only 1.3% in the third quarter because check mix offset most of the benefit from price increases[1]. On the call, management said menu pricing contributed about 2.7 percentage points and check mix subtracted about 1.4 points[3]. In the second quarter, the same two items were 1.6 points and minus 0.4 points, and comparable sales rose 2.2%[4]. Check mix reflects how much each order contains and how many people it feeds, so a larger drag means each order is worth less.
Management attributed the mix drag to smaller group sizes as rewards members redeem free entrées, and said it expects a drag of roughly 1 point to continue[3]. Rewards members now account for more than 33% of sales, and extra protein, a new sauce, chips and family meals offset part of the drag[3]. Spending per order outside of price is shrinking, so comparable sales depend more on price increases.
Traffic is still positive but slowing
Transactions grew 0.8% in the third quarter, the third straight positive quarter of 2026, but slower than 1.0% in the second quarter[1][4]. The company said industry headwinds beginning in mid-July slowed momentum, and it used promotions such as buy-one-get-one offers to hold traffic before trends normalized in late August. September comparable sales rose 3.8% with very little promotional activity[3]. October trends softened again, and management said transactions have since turned positive again[3].
For the fourth quarter, the company guided comparable sales up about 2%, transactions about flat, check mix down about 1 point and pricing at about 3%[3]. On that guidance, all fourth-quarter growth would come from price. The CFO also said transactions need to grow by about 1% a year to offset the margin dilution from new restaurants[3]. That makes traffic the key variable for any margin recovery.
Margin decline narrows; openings and cash broadly on plan
Restaurant-level operating margin was 23.3% in the third quarter, down 1.2 percentage points from a year earlier, a smaller decline than the 2.2 points in the second quarter[1][5]. Price increases and tariff relief cut food, beverage and packaging costs from 30.0% to 29.5% of revenue. Labor rose from 25.2% to 25.7% and other operating costs rose from 15.0% to 16.0%, mainly because of marketing and promotional staffing[1][3]. Operating income fell 5.3%, and diluted earnings per share fell 6.9% to $0.27[1]. The company guided fourth-quarter restaurant-level margin to just under 22% and described a 2027 baseline in the mid-24% range, assuming pricing offsets inflation and transactions grow at least about 1%[3].
Openings stayed on schedule. Chipotle opened 84 company-owned restaurants in the quarter, and total revenue rose 9.6%, 7.5 points faster than comparable sales[1]. Buybacks of $1.465 billion in the first nine months still exceeded operating cash flow less capital expenditures of about $1.28 billion[1]. Third-quarter buybacks were only $110.0 million; management said there was a period in the quarter when it could not repurchase stock and that it plans to return to the market after the blackout lifts[3]. Cash and investments rose to about $1.0 billion as a result[1].
Conclusion
The quarter confirms that Chipotle's traffic did not break during the industry slowdown and that price increases now cover food costs. The quality of growth has weakened: pricing contributes more while spending per order shrinks, and fourth-quarter transaction guidance is about flat. For margins to stop falling and reach the company's 2027 baseline, transactions need to grow more than 1% again. The rebound in cash mainly reflects paused buybacks and tax-payment timing, and the balance could fall again once buybacks resume. The next tests are whether fourth-quarter transactions hold at flat or better after the smoked brisket launch and whether the 10-Q confirms the split between price and mix.
