Summary

BP Q3 2026 refining and trading profit rose to $5.725 billion and operating cash flow hit $14.829 billion, cutting net debt to $13.87 billion, below its 2027 target range.

BP's Q3 2026 earnings showed high refining margins turning into large cash flows, and the balance sheet repaired faster than expected. bp published results for the third quarter (July to September) in a Form 6-K on October 30, 2026 [1]. Three questions had been in focus: how much refining profit bp could keep after selling a refinery, whether net debt could keep falling with buybacks suspended, and whether the upstream business could turn high oil prices into profit despite Middle East disruption. Refining profit and net debt both came in well ahead of the second-quarter baseline, while upstream production recovered but realized prices still lagged oil prices. Most of the gain came from an external margin window, so the next tests are refining profit per barrel after lower throughput and the Castrol proceeds.

bp is an integrated oil and gas company. Its upstream business produces oil and gas in the Gulf of America, US shale, the Middle East and Azerbaijan, among other places, and third-quarter production was 2.220 million barrels of oil equivalent per day [1]. Its customers & products segment includes retail fuels, convenience, aviation fuel and Castrol lubricants, as well as refining and oil trading [2]. The company earns money mainly from selling oil and gas, refining margins and trading.

Refining profit per barrel roughly doubled

The refining and trading business (products) earned an underlying result of $5.725 billion in the third quarter, about $2.5 billion more than the $3.183 billion in the second quarter [1]. Over the same period, the bp refining indicator margin rose from $29.6 to $46.7 per barrel, and refining availability recovered from 94.7% to 96.5% [1]. After the sale of the Gelsenkirchen refinery, throughput fell from 1.467 million to 1.396 million barrels per day, which was still above the 1.300-1.360 million barrels per day bp guided in August [1][3].

The profit increase more than offset the lower throughput. On an estimated per-barrel basis that includes oil trading, profit rose from about $23.8 to about $44.6. bp attributed the gain to significantly higher realized refining margins, stronger commercial optimization, lower turnaround activity and the absence of the prior-quarter Whiting event [1]. Management said utilization reached 98% in the first nine months, which supported almost $2 billion of higher refining margin capture [4]. This indicates the second-quarter result was not mainly a one-off timing gain, but the profit level still depends on the high margins created by Middle East disruption, and bp did not break down the contribution of each factor.

The customers business declined as guided. Its underlying result fell from $1.771 billion to $1.223 billion, including $285 million from Castrol [1]. bp cited weaker fuels margins and lower Castrol and midstream results, partly offset by seasonally higher volumes and lower operating expenditure [1].

Net debt fell below the target range early

Net debt was $13.870 billion at the end of the third quarter, down $8.381 billion from the end of the second quarter and below the company's $14-18 billion target range for 2027 [1]. Operating cash flow was $14.829 billion, even as income taxes paid rose to $2.303 billion and bp redeemed $1.0 billion of hybrid securities [1]. Divestment proceeds were a net outflow of $21 million and the working capital release was only $531 million, so almost all of the decline came from operating cash [1].

bp's October 13 trading statement had already indicated net debt of $13.5-14.5 billion, and the actual figure fell within that range [3]. The company now measures leverage by financial obligations, the sum of net debt, hybrids, leases and Gulf of America settlement liabilities. These totaled $44.3 billion at the end of the quarter, and bp aims to cut them to $33-35 billion by the end of 2026 [4]. bp said the Castrol sale is expected to complete imminently with proceeds of about $6 billion, and that it intends to prioritize excess cash flow to address its remaining Deepwater Horizon liabilities in full [1].

Upstream production recovered, but realized prices still lag

Upstream production was broadly flat with the second quarter, and plant reliability rose from 92.4% to 95.3% [1]. The average liquids realization was $77.20 per barrel, only about 79.6% of the $96.99 Brent average, down from about 82.0% in the second quarter [1]. The oil production & operations segment earned $3.534 billion, flat with the second quarter, mainly because lower charges for written-off exploration costs offset lower realizations. The gas & low carbon energy segment rose by about $1.06 billion, mostly from gas marketing and trading [1]. The price lag has not yet reversed, so the earlier assessment of the upstream business is unchanged.

Conclusion

The quarter shows that in a high-margin environment, bp's refineries and trading can turn price spreads into profit and cash, and the balance sheet repair has accelerated. Upstream oil and gas profit, however, did not rise with oil prices. bp expects fourth-quarter refinery throughput to fall to 1.160-1.210 million barrels per day, a significantly lower customers result and income taxes paid about $0.8 billion higher, and the Rotterdam refinery had an unplanned outage in October [1][4]. The next tests are whether refining profit per barrel stays near the third-quarter level and whether the Castrol proceeds bring financial obligations into the year-end target range.
