Summary

ASE Technology's Q3 2026 ATM revenue rose 20.1% and gross margin hit 30.6%, beating guidance, while capex outpaced cash flow and net debt to equity rose to 0.66.

ASE Technology (ASX) Q3 2026 earnings showed assembly-and-test revenue and margins well above company guidance, while faster capacity spending widened the cash gap and pushed debt higher. The company reported results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 in a Form 6-K on October 29, 2026 [1]. Before the release, four questions framed the quarter: whether ATM (assembly, testing and materials) revenue and gross margin could beat guidance, whether passing through higher component costs would squeeze margins in EMS (electronic manufacturing services), and whether operating cash flow could keep up with capital spending. The first two came in well above guidance, the EMS operating margin met guidance, and cash coverage clearly worsened. Overall, profitability stepped up and both growth and profit conversion look stronger than they did a quarter ago, but the cash and leverage cost of expansion is also higher [1][2].

ASE Technology is the world's largest independent semiconductor assembly and test provider. It packages and tests chips for fabless designers and integrated device manufacturers and charges by processing volume. Its USI subsidiary assembles systems for brand customers, which brings large revenue at low margins. Consolidated Q3 2026 revenue was NT$244.161 billion, up 44.8% year over year, and ATM generated about 91% of operating profit [1][2].

ATM gross margin rose to 30.6%

The ATM gross margin improved far more than guided. In Q3 2026 it reached 30.6%, up 3.3 percentage points from Q2 and 1.6 points above the top of the 28%-29% guidance range. ATM operating margin rose from 15.7% to 20.0%, and the consolidated operating margin of 13.6% also beat the 11.5%-12.5% guidance [1].

Three changes lifted the margin together. Advanced packaging (bumping, flip chip, wafer-level and system-in-package) rose from 49% to 51% of ATM revenue, and computing applications rose from 30% to 34%. ATM revenue grew 20.1% sequentially while consolidated depreciation and amortization grew only about 11%, so fixed costs were spread over more output [1]. Management attributed the expansion to the advanced-packaging ramp and favorable pricing, said those capacities are running at or near full utilization, and said the old structural margin ceiling "is now the new base" [3]. The company does not disclose margins by package type, so the separate contributions of mix, pricing and utilization cannot be split.

The change reshaped the profit base. ATM operating income rose NT$10.465 billion sequentially and accounted for most of the consolidated operating profit increase [1]. The company guided Q4 2026 ATM gross margin up another 100-200 basis points and consolidated operating margin to 14.5%-15.5% [2].

ATM revenue grew 20%, led by advanced packaging

ATM revenue beat guidance by a wide margin, and September did not slow. Q3 ATM revenue was NT$151.485 billion, up 20.1% sequentially versus 11%-13% guidance [1]. September revenue alone was NT$52.674 billion, above August's NT$51.287 billion [4]. Packaging revenue grew about 23% sequentially while the wirebonder count stayed flat [1][2].

Testing capacity converted to revenue more slowly. Testing revenue grew only about 11% sequentially, and the tester count rose by 483 to 8,831. Testing equipment spending of US$1.067 billion in the same quarter may produce output with a lag [1]. Management raised its 2026 advanced-packaging (LEAP) revenue target to more than US$4 billion and said factory space is the bottleneck [3]. The company guided Q4 2026 ATM revenue up another 11%-13% [2].

Capacity payments accelerated and interest-bearing debt rose about NT$100.2 billion

The cash gap widened even as profits improved. Q3 operating cash flow was NT$50.462 billion against NT$125.852 billion of payments for property, plant and equipment, a coverage ratio of about 40% compared with about 59% in Q2 [1]. Net borrowing and bond proceeds of NT$100.925 billion covered the gap and dividends. Interest-bearing debt rose to NT$406.461 billion, and the net debt to equity ratio rose from 0.47 to 0.66 [1][2].

Working capital and faster equipment spending explain most of the gap. Trade receivables rose NT$31.177 billion and inventories rose NT$13.453 billion, and quarterly equipment capex climbed to US$2.104 billion [1][2]. Management raised full-year 2026 capex to US$11.5 billion, expects 2027 to be higher, and acknowledged that free cash flow will stay negative in the near term [3].

EMS margin met guidance

The EMS operating margin met guidance, but pressure is building into Q4. EMS revenue grew 42.1% sequentially. Gross margin fell from 8.9% to 8.3% as component costs were passed through, while operating margin rose from 2.4% to 3.3% on expense leverage [1]. The company guided the Q4 2026 EMS operating margin down to about 2%, and management cited higher costs from AI-related component shortages [2][3].

Conclusion

The report strengthens the case for ASE's growth and profit conversion: capacity-constrained demand for advanced packaging produced both revenue above guidance and a higher margin level. The view on cash generation weakens, because capacity payments are growing much faster than operating cash flow and leverage rose sharply. Whether the margin gains last depends on utilization and pricing as new capacity comes online. Q4 results will test whether margins rise as guided, cash coverage recovers and leverage stops climbing.
