ADP Q1 Fiscal 2027 Earnings: Client Funds Interest Up 15%, Outlook Raised

Summary
ADP fiscal Q1 2027 revenue rose 6% and client funds interest grew 15%, lifting its full-year interest outlook by $50 million, though fee revenue grew only about 4.8%.
ADP's fiscal 2027 first-quarter earnings, released in an 8-K on October 28, 2026 for the July-September 2026 quarter, came in ahead of the company's own expectations, and management raised its full-year outlook [1]. Going into the quarter, three questions mattered most: whether headcount growth at existing clients and client retention could support 5%-6% growth in Employer Services (ES); whether rising yields could deliver roughly 14%-15% growth in client funds interest as balance growth slowed; and how much further PEO margins would fall as benefits costs outpaced worksite employee growth. In the quarter, client funds interest rose 15% and ES revenue rose 6%, both ahead of the company's assumptions. PEO margin was flat year over year, but zero-margin benefits pass-through costs grew about 8.6%, still faster than 2% worksite employee growth, and the flat margin relied on cost savings whose details were not disclosed [1][2]. Overall, growth did not slow the way the July outlook assumed, and profit conversion still leans first on near-costless interest income.
ADP is one of the world's largest payroll and human capital management providers, serving more than 1.1 million clients in over 140 countries [1]. Its revenue comes from three sources: ES fees for payroll, HR and compliance services; the PEO business, which acts as co-employer for small and mid-sized businesses and whose revenue is mostly zero-margin benefits pass-throughs; and interest earned by investing client payroll funds before they are paid out [3][4].
Client funds interest rose 15% and ADP raised its outlook by $50 million
Client funds interest beat the prior baseline because both balances and yields came in ahead of the company's assumptions. Interest grew 13.9% in fiscal 2026 [4]. ADP's July outlook for fiscal 2027 called for $1.54-$1.56 billion, assuming 3%-4% balance growth and a yield of about 3.7% [1]. In the first quarter, interest was $329.3 million, up 15%; average client funds balances were $36.9 billion, up 6%; and the average yield was 3.6%, 30 basis points higher than a year earlier [1].
Management attributed the beat mainly to stronger growth in average client funds balances [2]. The yield gain came from the longer-dated portfolios: the client extended portfolio rose from 3.1% to 3.9%, while the client short portfolio fell from 3.8% to 3.1% [1]. ADP then raised its full-year client funds interest outlook to $1.59-$1.61 billion, lifted its balance growth assumption to 4%-5% and raised its yield assumption to about 3.8% [1].
Nearly all of this interest falls through to profit, and the net impact from the client funds strategy was $332.9 million, up 26% [1]. At the $1.60 billion midpoint of the outlook, interest needs to grow about 19% year over year over the remaining three quarters, faster than the first quarter's 15%. That acceleration depends on reinvestment rates the company assumed from forward yield curves as of October 27, and it has not yet been realized [1].
Employer Services organic growth accelerated to 6% as client headcount grew 2%
Employer Services grew faster than expected, and headcount, retention and bookings all held up. First-quarter ES revenue was $3,685.4 million, up 6% (about 5.6% unrounded), with organic constant currency growth of 6% versus 5% a year earlier [1]. U.S. pays per control, which measures payroll headcount growth at the same set of clients, rose 2% compared with 0% a year earlier [1]. Management said client revenue retention improved slightly, first-quarter new business bookings were a first-quarter record, and global offerings got off to a softer start [2].
Headcount growth at existing clients carries almost no acquisition cost, so it lifts profit directly. ES segment earnings were $1,343.5 million, up 9%, and segment margin rose 130 basis points to 36.5% [1]. Management attributed the margin gain to both operational productivity and client funds interest [2]. ADP raised its full-year pays per control outlook to about 1% and its ES revenue outlook to about 6%; the revenue raise came mainly from interest and already includes close to half a point of foreign exchange headwind. The bookings and retention outlooks were unchanged [1][2].
About one percentage point of ES growth still came from interest. Revenue excluding client funds interest and PEO was $3,356.2 million, up about 4.8% [1]. This is a consolidated figure and only approximates ES fee revenue. Large enterprise deals are expected to contribute revenue only at the end of fiscal 2027 or even in fiscal 2028 [2].
Conclusion
The quarter strengthens the case for ADP's growth and profit conversion, though a sizable part of the improvement came from interest. Adjusted EBIT margin was 26.8%, up 130 basis points, and adjusted diluted EPS was $2.82, up 13% [1]. ADP raised its full-year revenue and EPS outlook but kept its forecast for 70-90 basis points of adjusted EBIT margin expansion, and management said it would reinvest part of the upside in AI and cloud infrastructure [1][2].
Cash generation did not change: first-quarter operating cash flow was $651 million, roughly flat with a year earlier [1]. The next tests are whether interest can accelerate to about 19% over the remaining three quarters, whether fee revenue growth can close the gap with total ES growth, and whether the PEO cost savings last. Lower interest rates or slower hiring would weaken both the headcount and the interest sources of growth.
