Alphabet (GOOGL) Q3 2026 Earnings: Search Slows to 12%, Cloud Revenue Doubles

Summary
Alphabet's Q3 2026 revenue rose 25% as Google Cloud revenue doubled, while Search growth slowed to 12% and faster depreciation cut the operating margin to 31.8%.
Alphabet's third-quarter 2026 earnings, released on October 28, 2026 through an earnings press release and call and followed by a quarterly report the next day, show the growth engine shifting from Search to Google Cloud while profit and cash conversion both came under pressure [1][2][3]. Three questions framed the quarter: whether AI-driven Search could hold mid-teens growth against a tougher prior-year base and a turn in currency effects, whether Cloud could balance growth and margin while relying on third-party compute, and whether depreciation and cash flow could absorb annual capital expenditures of roughly $200 billion. Cloud beat expectations across the board, Search growth slowed to 12%, and the consolidated operating margin fell to 31.8%. Overall, Alphabet's growth now depends more on its capital-intensive cloud and TPU businesses, and profit and cash conversion have slowed.
Alphabet is Google's parent company and earns most of its revenue from Search and YouTube advertising. Its second-largest business, Google Cloud, sells computing capacity and Gemini models to enterprises and, starting in 2026, also sells its in-house TPU systems for customer data centers. Alphabet's 2025 revenue was $402.836 billion [4].
Search growth slowed to 12% as paid clicks lagged queries
Search revenue growth slowed sharply, and the slowdown was concentrated in paid clicks. Search & other revenue was $63.350 billion, up 12% year over year, compared with 17% growth in the second quarter [1][5]. Paid clicks grew 8%, down from 13% in the second quarter, while cost-per-click rose 4%, up from 3% [3][6]. Query growth was the highest in five years [1], and the traffic acquisition cost (TAC) rate was 20.0%, roughly unchanged from a year earlier [3], so pricing per click did not deteriorate.
Management attributed the slowdown to currency, the prior-year base and industry factors, and acknowledged lower monetization in AI Mode [2]. The CFO said the Search acceleration in the second half of last year weighed on growth by about 3 percentage points [2]. The currency effect on consolidated revenue moved from a tailwind of about 1 percentage point in the second quarter to a headwind of 1 percentage point [1][7]. Together these roughly explain the size of the slowdown, but Alphabet did not disclose the currency effect on Search alone or the monetization gap in AI Mode. The company has expanded AI Mode ads to international markets, and it expects a slightly larger currency headwind in the fourth quarter and a base effect of a couple of points [2].
Google Cloud revenue doubled as margin and backlog rose
Cloud improved on all three measures at once. Google Cloud revenue was $30.709 billion, up 103% year over year and 24% from the second quarter [1][5]. Its operating margin rose from 23.7% a year earlier to 36.2% [2]. Backlog reached $560.8 billion, about $46.9 billion more than at the end of June, and Alphabet expects to recognize just over 55% of its total backlog as revenue within 24 months [3][8]. Of the $9.348 billion year-over-year increase in consolidated operating income, Cloud contributed $7.527 billion [1].
Three caveats limit this result. Third-party bridging capacity only came online at the very end of the quarter, and the company expects margin headwinds in the fourth quarter [2]. Alphabet did not disclose the revenue amount from TPU system sales [2]. Of the backlog, $16.8 billion comes from Crux AI, a related party [3].
Depreciation grew twice as fast as revenue, cutting margin to 31.8%
Depreciation outpaced revenue, and the consolidated margin declined. Operating income was $40.576 billion, up 30% year over year, with a margin of 31.8% compared with 34.0% in the second quarter [1][9]. Depreciation was $8.369 billion, up 49% year over year, while revenue grew 25% [1]. The second quarter included a $1.5 billion PriceRunner damages benefit [10]; excluding it, that quarter's margin was about 32.8%. The prior-year quarter included a $3.5 billion European Commission fine [3]; adding it back gives about 33.9%. On either comparable basis, the margin still declined.
Capital expenditures now exceed operating cash flow, and external financing fills the gap. Third-quarter capital expenditures were $51.355 billion, operating cash flow was $42.290 billion and free cash flow was negative $9.065 billion [1]. Operating cash flow absorbed a $5.2 billion fine payment and the TPU inventory build [2]. During the quarter, Alphabet raised $28.7 billion from debt and $12.4 billion from stock sales and repurchased no shares [1]. Full-year capital expenditure guidance is unchanged, implying $63 billion to $73 billion in the fourth quarter, and the company expects a significant increase in 2027 [2].
Conclusion
The report changes the view of where Alphabet's growth comes from and how quickly its investments pay back. Of the $25.2 billion increase in revenue, Cloud contributed $15.6 billion and Search $6.8 billion [1]. Cloud's margin improved, but depreciation and TPU hardware pulled down the consolidated margin, and free cash flow depends on financing. The next tests are whether AI Mode ads can narrow the gap between queries and clicks, whether Cloud can hold a margin above 33% once third-party capacity is fully included, and whether depreciation and TPU inventory keep pressing on profit and cash flow. TPU revenue, the currency effect on Search alone and 2027 capital expenditure guidance have not been disclosed.
