Shinhan Financial (SHG) Q3 2026: Bank Margin Narrows After Rate Hike

Summary
Shinhan Financial Q3 2026 net income rose 11.32%, but bank NIM fell 3bp after the July hike and operating income declined, while CET1 rose to 13.62%.
Shinhan Financial Group (SHG) reported third-quarter 2026 results on October 27, 2026, through a preliminary 6-K and an earnings call, and the Shinhan Financial net interest margin fell after the July rate hike instead of widening [1][2]. Headline profit still grew, but operating earnings slowed. The questions going into the quarter were whether the July hike would widen the bank's margin, whether the first-half capital-market fee boom would last, whether credit cost would hold at 42 basis points, and whether capital could cover both buybacks and the Lotte Non-Life Insurance acquisition. The answers: the margin narrowed, fees fell from their peak, credit cost held but Shinhan Card's operating profit declined, and capital came in stronger than expected [2]. Overall, profit growth leaned on a one-off item and the capital improvement came mainly from currency moves.
Shinhan Financial is a bank-led Korean financial holding company whose subsidiaries include Shinhan Bank, Shinhan Card, Shinhan Securities and Shinhan Life [3]. The bank takes won deposits and lends to companies and households, earning mainly the spread between loan and deposit rates plus fees from selling funds and insurance; card, securities and insurance businesses add to that [3].
Change one: the bank's margin narrowed after the hike, and guidance moved to flat through year-end
Shinhan Bank's net interest margin narrowed in the first quarter after the rate hike. The bank's third-quarter NIM was 1.58%, 3 basis points below 1.61% in the second quarter and 3 basis points above 1.55% a year earlier [2]. In July the company had expected the margin to widen by another 3 to 4 basis points in the second half after the hike [4]. It now says the margin will stay at the current level through year-end and improve gradually next year as six-month deposits reprice [2].
Management attributed the narrower margin to funding costs rising faster than loan yields. The bank's chief financial officer said asset yields rose about 10 basis points while funding costs rose about 13 to 14 basis points [2]. Retail deposits moved into the stock market, and to meet liquidity requirements the bank replaced them with more expensive institutional and corporate deposits [2]. Quarterly loan and deposit balances and rates were not disclosed, so the separate effects of volume and pricing cannot yet be split.
Shinhan Bank's profit still grew, but the increase did not come from the margin. Shinhan Bank's third-quarter net income attributable to controlling interest was KRW 1,225.211 billion, up 12.48% year over year and down 5.85% from the second quarter; operating income rose 8.57% year over year [1]. The bank produced about 77% of the group's third-quarter net income attributable, so a stalled margin directly limits the group's interest income growth.
Change two: capital beat expectations, but the quality of profit growth weakened
The capital buffer is large enough to absorb the Lotte deal and the new buyback. Group CET1 (common equity tier 1 ratio) was 13.62% at the end of September, above the company's 13.0% to 13.4% target range [5]; management said it rose 12 basis points from the prior quarter, mainly because currency moves cut risk-weighted assets by 1.6% [2]. Management estimated that buying about 77% of Lotte Non-Life Insurance would lower CET1 by about 19 basis points [2]. The board kept the quarterly dividend at KRW 740 per share [6] and approved a KRW 450 billion buyback for cancellation, with about KRW 200 billion to be bought in 2026 and about KRW 250 billion in January 2027 [7].
Group profit growth slowed from the first half, and operating income fell year over year. Third-quarter group net income attributable was KRW 1,584.629 billion, up 11.32% year over year, compared with 13.34% growth in the first half [1][8]. Group operating income was KRW 1,907.021 billion, down 2.44% year over year [1]. Weaker capital-market income was one reason: management said securities trading volume fell sharply after peaking in the second quarter and higher interest rates caused losses on bond holdings, but fee amounts were not disclosed [2].
A non-operating gain at Shinhan Card carried the profit growth. Shinhan Card's third-quarter net income attributable rose 73.70% year over year, while its operating income was KRW 129.608 billion, down 27.18%; income before taxes exceeded operating income by about KRW 172.2 billion, and the nature of that item was not disclosed [1]. Group income before taxes exceeded operating income by about KRW 204.2 billion, about 84% of it from Shinhan Card; excluding Shinhan Card, group net income attributable rose only about 4.8% year over year [1]. Shinhan Card's delinquency ratio rose 2 basis points from the prior quarter, while group credit cost was 42 basis points, 4 basis points better than a year earlier [2].
Conclusion
The third-quarter results weaken the view that the rate hike would accelerate Shinhan Financial's earnings. On growth, the margin did not widen and fees have come down, so bank profit growth now relies on balance-sheet size and cost control. On profit conversion, operating income fell year over year and headline profit depended on an undisclosed item at Shinhan Card. On capital, CET1 and shareholder returns beat expectations, but the improvement came mainly from currency moves and could reverse if the won moves the other way. The next evidence to check is whether the fourth-quarter margin holds at 1.58%, whether deposit repricing lowers funding costs, whether Shinhan Card's operating profit stops falling, and the actual capital impact when the Lotte deal closes.
