Republic Services (RSG) Q3 2026 Earnings: Margin Falls 100 bps as Environmental Solutions Rebounds

Summary
Republic Services grew Q3 2026 revenue 8.2%, but its adjusted EBITDA margin fell to 31.8% from 32.8%, missing its flat-margin guidance, while Environmental Solutions revenue rose 22.2%.
Republic Services (RSG) reported third-quarter 2026 earnings in a Form 8-K release on October 29, 2026, covering the quarter ended September 30. Revenue growth accelerated, but the adjusted EBITDA margin came in below the company's own guidance [1]. On the second-quarter call, management had said third-quarter margin should be roughly flat with the prior year [2]. The other open questions were whether Environmental Solutions would return to growth in the second half and whether price increases would keep covering lost collection volume. In the third quarter, the adjusted EBITDA margin fell to 31.8% from 32.8%, Environmental Solutions rebounded sharply, and collection volume recovered while average yield declined [1][3]. Overall, growth strengthened, profit conversion weakened and cash generation held up; the company raised its full-year adjusted EBITDA and adjusted free cash flow guidance [1].
Republic Services is one of the largest environmental services companies in North America by revenue, with collection, transfer, recycling and landfill operations across the United States and Canada [4]. In 2025, about 89% of revenue came from its recycling and waste business, which serves residential, commercial and industrial customers. Most of the rest came from Environmental Solutions, which covers hazardous waste handling, field industrial services and emergency response [5]. The company earns its money mainly through collection contracts, landfill disposal fees and annual price increases.
Change 1: Margin came in about 100 basis points below guidance
The third-quarter adjusted EBITDA margin was 100 basis points lower than a year earlier, which departs from the "roughly flat" guidance given on the second-quarter call [1][2]. Management said higher healthcare claims and the absence of a prior-year rebate reduced margin by 60 basis points [3]. Fuel cost rose to $180 million from $120 million, and fuel recovery fees added 1.8 percentage points to revenue growth [1]. In dollar terms the fees roughly covered the higher fuel cost, but they enlarged revenue and so diluted the margin percentage. Construction and demolition landfill volume fell 38.2% against a high prior-year base created by wildfire and hurricane cleanup [1]. The company did not disclose the rest of the breakdown.
The miss changes the full-year margin path but does not weaken cash generation. Republic Services raised its full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance to $5.550 billion-$5.575 billion, and management attributed the increase mainly to fuel recovery fee catch-up and Environmental Solutions [1][3]. At the guidance midpoints, the full-year margin works out to about 31.9%, slightly below 32.0% in 2025, so the small expansion implied by the earlier guidance has turned into a small contraction. Adjusted free cash flow for the first nine months was $2.28 billion, up 3.9%, and the full-year guidance rose to $2.565 billion-$2.585 billion [1].
Change 2: Environmental Solutions returned to growth, with more than half from emergency work
Environmental Solutions returned to year-over-year growth in the third quarter, as management had indicated. The business generated net revenue of $529 million, up 22.2%, and its adjusted EBITDA margin was 25.4%, compared with 21.0% a year earlier [1]. Excluding acquisitions, the business contributed 2.1 percentage points of total company revenue growth [1].
More than half of that growth came from work that will not repeat. Management said growth was driven mainly by several large emergency response jobs and was about 9% excluding them; those jobs also lifted the margin [3]. The segment's nine-month margin was 21.9%, still slightly below 22.1% a year earlier [1].
Change 3: Collection volume recovered, diluting average yield
Commercial customers began adding service, but the new business is priced below the average rate. Related-business volume fell 0.7%, compared with -1.9% in the second quarter, and average yield declined to 3.5% from 4.0% in the second quarter [1][6]. Small-container and large-container volumes each grew 0.5%. Management said this was the first time in over three years that both grew at the same time, and that the new units are priced below average but remain profitable [1][3]. Core price was 6.3%, within the 6.2%-6.4% range management gave earlier [1][7].
Combined price and volume improved, but profit did not follow. Yield plus volume added up to 2.8 percentage points, above 2.1 points in the second quarter but below 4.5 points a year earlier [1][6]. Recycling and waste revenue grew 6.6% while its adjusted EBITDA grew only 1.8%, and the segment margin fell to 32.6% from 34.2% [1]. Fuel, healthcare and the prior-year high base fall mainly on this business, but their shares were not disclosed. Customer retention remained above 94%, so the evidence does not support the concern that price increases are costing customers [3].
Conclusion
The quarter shows a company whose growth engine is strengthening while its profit conversion weakens, with cash generation intact. Large emergency jobs will not repeat, and management did not say whether healthcare costs will ease. Whether Environmental Solutions keeps growing in the fourth quarter, whether combined price and volume holds near 2.8 percentage points, whether the margin returns to year-over-year expansion, and the full-year guidance due in February 2027 will show whether this decline is only temporary.
