Summary

NXP Q3 2026 revenue rose 19.3% to $3.786 billion with a record 58.6% non-GAAP gross margin; Q4 margin guidance rose to 59% and the data center goal to about $1 billion by 2028.

NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) reported Q3 2026 earnings on October 27, 2026, through its earnings release, Form 10-Q and earnings call for the quarter ended September 27, and the results confirmed the quality of its recovery in both growth and profit [1][2][3]. Earlier research followed four questions: whether gross margin could keep moving toward 60% as foundry costs rose, whether fast Industrial & IoT growth relied on distributors building inventory, how much of the Communication Infrastructure rebound came from data centers, and whether automotive growth reflected more chip content per vehicle or customer restocking. This quarter confirmed the first three. Automotive revenue met expectations, but NXP no longer disclosed the figure that separated the two explanations, and some automakers are discussing safety stock, so that question remains open [3]. Overall, growth now rests on three lines (automotive, industrial and data center) and profit conversion improved, while higher capital spending and operating expenses in 2027 will offset part of that improvement.

NXP is a chipmaker focused on automotive and industrial markets. It sells processors, microcontrollers, connectivity and security chips to tier-one auto suppliers, automakers and industrial equipment makers. Revenue was $12.269 billion in 2025, with automotive at 58% [4][5]. About 59% of Q3 revenue went through distributors, and Avnet alone accounted for 23% of 2025 revenue [2][6].

Gross margin kept rising and Q4 guidance moved to 59%

Q3 gross margin came in slightly above guidance, and profit grew faster than revenue. Non-GAAP gross margin was 58.6%, up 1.6 percentage points year over year and above the 58.5% midpoint NXP guided in July [1][7]. Non-GAAP operating margin was 37.1%, up 3.3 points, and non-GAAP operating income rose 31% to $1.406 billion [1]. Based on the disclosed figures, the incremental gross margin was about 66% [1].

Management attributed the improvement to utilization and product mix. The CFO said factory utilization is in the mid-80s and is expected to reach the high 80s in 2027; Q3 price increases of about 1% only offset input costs, and pricing is neutral for 2026 overall [3]. Days of inventory fell to 148 from 156 in Q2, including about 13 days of pre-built inventory for factory consolidation, so higher utilization kept pace with higher shipments [3].

Q4 guidance rose even though cost increases were expected. In July NXP said foundry cost increases could start to affect costs in Q4 [8]. This time it guided Q4 non-GAAP gross margin to 59.0% and operating margin to 37.5%, and it plans to reach 60% in 2027 [1][3]. The 60% figure remains a company plan. Operating expenses are expected to rise to about 23% of revenue in the first half of 2027, and capital spending will rise from about 2% of revenue this year to about 5% [3].

Data center outlook raised as processors lift Communication Infrastructure

Growth in Communication Infrastructure came mainly from processors, and NXP raised its data center outlook. The market's Q3 revenue was $503 million, up 53.8% year over year and 11.3% sequentially [2]. The 10-Q attributed the growth to processors, and the CEO cited data center and secure cards [2][3]. Management said 2026 data center revenue will exceed the $500 million outlook given earlier this year and expects it to reach about $1 billion in 2028 [3].

The data center figures are still incomplete. Management said about half of data center revenue sits in digital networking products and the rest in other end markets; the quarterly amount is not disclosed, and the secure card contribution was not broken out [3]. NXP plans to realign its end-market reporting starting in 2027 [3].

Industrial & IoT growth without higher channel inventory

The fast Industrial & IoT growth mainly reflects end demand. The market's Q3 revenue was $802 million, up 38.5% year over year, and the industrial portion grew nearly 50%, led by data center and factory automation, among others [2][3]. Channel inventory stayed at 11 weeks for a third straight quarter. Distributor revenue grew 20.3% versus 18.0% for direct sales, narrowing the gap from about 17 points in Q2 to about 2 points [1][2].

This confirmation covers this quarter only. Channel inventory is still 2 weeks higher than a year ago, and 80% of product lead times exceed 16 weeks, which could push customers to order early [1][3]; distributors' sell-through to end customers is not disclosed.

Conclusion

This report broadens NXP's growth from an automotive recovery to a mix of automotive, industrial and data center demand, and a rising share of processors lifted both revenue and gross margin [2][3]. Automotive revenue was $2.070 billion, up 12.7% year over year and about 17% excluding the divested sensor business; software-defined vehicle revenue is running above $1.5 billion annualized, and management denied broad-based restocking [2][3].

Cash generation also improved, though investment will increase next year. Q3 free cash flow was $1.206 billion, or 31.9% of revenue, and the board authorized an additional $5 billion share repurchase program [1]. The main uncertainty is safety stock and early ordering while lead times are long. Whether Q4 gross margin reaches 59%, whether automotive and distribution show inventory building, and whether the new reporting shows data center revenue on its own will determine whether this assessment strengthens or weakens.
