Corning (GLW) Q3 2026 Earnings: Optical Up 44%, Solar Profit Pushed to 2027

Summary
Corning Q3 2026 core sales rose 19% to $5.081 billion, beating guidance as optical sales grew 44%, while solar stayed at a $7 million loss and glass profit fell 10%.
Corning's Q3 2026 earnings showed optical communications sales up 44%, while the solar turnaround slipped and the glass business declined. Corning released results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 on October 27, 2026 and held an earnings call the same day [1][2]. Growth and cash flow were better than expected, and the profit improvement came mainly from optical communications.
Four operating questions framed the quarter: whether optical communications could keep growing more than 30% while adding capacity, whether solar could return to profit after maintenance, whether the glass business could withstand weaker smartphone demand, and whether expansion could be funded without issuing equity. Core sales were $5.081 billion, up 19% year over year, and core EPS was $0.91, up 36%. Both beat the July guidance of $4.9 billion to $5.0 billion and $0.85 to $0.89 [1][3]. Optical beat expectations, solar and glass fell short, and expansion funding stayed solid, so growth is now more concentrated in AI data centers.
Corning is a materials science company. Its products include optical fiber, cable and connectivity solutions, display glass substrates and Gorilla cover glass, and polysilicon, wafers and solar modules [4][5]. Its main optical customers are hyperscale cloud providers and telecom carriers, and much of its new capacity is backed by multi-year agreements.
Optical communications grew 44% and margin kept rising
Optical communications sales were $2.379 billion in Q3, up 44% year over year, and segment net income was $532 million, up 80% [1]. Segment net income divided by sales gives a net margin of 22.4%, up from 21.1% in Q2 and 17.9% a year earlier [1][6]. All three earlier benchmarks were met: sales of at least $2.15 billion, Enterprise growth of at least 50% and a net margin of at least 21%.
The growth came from data center customers adopting Corning's new high-density products faster. Enterprise Networks (the data center business) grew 84% year over year, and Gen AI product sales grew more than 100%. Management said Enterprise has reached an annualized run rate of about $6 billion but did not disclose the quarterly amount [1][2]. Carrier sales grew 4%, driven by data center interconnect, and Corning signed long-term agreements with Zayo, Verizon and AT&T during the quarter [2]. Management described supply as tight and said capacity goes first to long-standing customers that help fund expansions [2]. Corning did not break out how much of the margin gain came from price, mix or capacity utilization.
Solar stayed in the red, and improvement moved into 2027
Solar sales were $436 million in Q3, up 37% year over year but slightly below $438 million in Q2. The segment posted a $7 million net loss, the same as in Q2 [1]. The Q2 loss included about $30 million of one-time maintenance costs. At that time, management expected solar sales and profit to improve starting in Q3 and attributed the expected Q3 margin step-up mainly to solar's recovery [3][6].
This quarter, management said the wafer and module ramp is slower than anticipated, the Q3 drag is similar to Q2, and improvement will come slowly through 2027 [2]. U.S. trade action under Section 232 improved pricing for U.S.-made solar products, but that has not yet shown up in segment profit [2]. Company-wide core operating margin rose to 22.7%. The CFO said the gain came from optical communications and that solar is still pulling margins down [1][2].
Glass Innovations sales and profit fell year over year
Glass Innovations sales were $1.506 billion in Q3, down 3% year over year. Segment net income was $328 million, down 10% year over year and 7% from Q2 [1]. In the same quarter, TV units fell 4%, and notebooks and handhelds fell about 20%. That is worse than the mid-teens decline in full-year handheld units that Corning expected in July [2][7]. Corning said it outperformed its end markets, but sales and profit still declined [1].
Profit fell faster than sales. Management pointed to a weaker yen and rising costs for critical materials and energy, and announced a price increase for display glass substrates [2]. The CFO said the increase begins to take effect in Q4 but will not have a significant impact in that quarter [2]. The 2025 comparison period uses the old currency adjustment method; Corning said the new method would show better year-over-year growth but did not quantify the difference [1].
Conclusion
The Q3 report strengthens the view of Corning's growth engine, while showing that its non-AI businesses are holding back profit for now. On cash, Corning received no new large customer prepayments this quarter, yet adjusted free cash flow was still $661 million. Capital expenditures were $545 million, and the full-year plan of about $2 billion is unchanged [1][2]. The $2 billion at-the-market equity program set up in September has not been used, and the CFO said there is no intention to use it at this time [2][8]. Contract liability balances will not be known until the quarterly report is filed.
Corning guided Q4 core sales to $5.2 billion to $5.3 billion and core EPS to $0.96 to $1.00, growth of about 19% and 36% [1]. The next quarter will show whether optical can keep growing from a high level, whether solar losses narrow, whether the glass price increase steadies profit, and whether free cash flow stays positive with about $700 million of Q4 capital spending.
