Summary

Ecolab Q3 2026: Global Water organic operating income rose 9% as High-Tech grew 63%; adjusted EPS of $2.18 hit guidance midpoint and CoolIT dilution matched plan.

Ecolab (ECL) reported third-quarter 2026 results, for the quarter ended September 30, in an 8-K news release and an earnings call on October 27, 2026; the main development was a sharp pickup in profit growth at its Global Water segment [1]. Ecolab Q3 2026 earnings answered three earlier operating questions: whether the water segment's margin decline would stop, whether an energy surcharge would let prices catch up with raw material costs, and whether the restaurant and hotel cleaning business could keep growing profit as restaurant traffic weakened. Global Water organic operating income rose 9% year over year, compared with just 1% in the second quarter [1][2]. Within it, the High-Tech business, which serves chip fabs and data centers, grew 63% organically, and the heavy industry and paper businesses both returned to growth. Pricing contributed 5%, organic gross margin held steady but did not expand, and adjusted EPS of $2.18 landed at the midpoint of the company's $2.13-$2.23 guidance [1]. The Institutional & Specialty segment grew operating income 8%, but sales rose only 3% and institutional customer volume declined slightly [1][3]. Taken together, demand for AI data center cooling and ultrapure water for chipmaking has started to lift Ecolab's core water business, although management said 63% is not a steady-state growth rate [3].

Ecolab supplies cleaning and sanitizing chemicals, water treatment chemicals and on-site service to factories, restaurants, hotels, hospitals and drug makers; it had about $16 billion of sales in 2025 and customers in more than 170 countries [4]. The company installs dosing and monitoring equipment at customer sites, then sells chemicals based on usage and charges service and equipment rental fees. Water treatment and restaurant and hotel cleaning are its two largest profit sources.

Global Water profit growth rose from 1% to 9%

Global Water organic operating income was $391.3 million in the third quarter, up 9% year over year, and the organic operating margin was 17.5%, 0.1 percentage point above a year earlier [5]. In the second quarter, the segment's organic operating income grew only 1% and its organic margin fell 0.5 percentage point year over year; the company expected improvement in the third quarter at that time [2]. The organic measure excludes the Ovivo and CoolIT acquisitions, so this growth came from the existing business. Segment sales at fixed currency rose 20%, with acquisitions adding 11 percentage points and organic growth of 9% [1]. The company attributed the profit improvement to pricing and productivity gains, which together more than offset growth investments and higher raw material costs [1].

Growth came from more sources than in the first half. High-Tech grew 63% organically, versus 29% in the second quarter, with growth in both microelectronics and data centers [5]. Management said this growth came from the data center shift to direct-to-chip liquid cooling, which delivers coolant directly to the chips, and the resulting demand for its existing monitoring, coolant and service offerings; cross-selling after the acquisitions had not yet contributed [3]. Heavy Water grew 4% organically and Paper grew 6%; in the second quarter they had declined 1% and been flat, respectively [5][2].

This improvement has clear limits. Management said 63% is not a steady-state growth rate and that quarterly sales depend on when data centers start operating and when deliveries occur [3]. The segment's organic margin rose only 0.1 percentage point, so faster revenue growth has not yet turned into meaningful margin expansion. Ecolab did not disclose High-Tech's dollar base, so its contribution to segment profit cannot be calculated.

CoolIT dilution in its first consolidated quarter matched plan

CoolIT was consolidated in July; it added $20 million of amortization in the quarter, and net interest expense rose $70 million year over year [1]. The chief financial officer confirmed that CoolIT reduced third-quarter EPS growth by about 10 percentage points and that the drag will rise to about 12 percentage points in the fourth quarter [3]. The company expects CoolIT's 2026 sales to more than double compared with pre-acquisition sales; management said progress is slightly ahead of plan and that capacity may need to expand beyond what was planned [1][3]. The acquisition also raised leverage: net debt to EBITDA rose to 3.1 times from 1.7 times a year earlier, and the company has made deleveraging a priority [5][3].

Conclusion

The report strengthens the growth case: organic sales rose 7%, organic operating income rose 11%, and the core water business reaccelerated on the back of High-Tech [1]. Profit conversion still relies mainly on operating expense leverage, with organic gross margin flat, and management expects fourth-quarter raw material inflation to be slightly higher than in the third quarter [3]. On cash, operating cash flow for the first nine months was $1.939 billion and capital expenditures were $902 million, both higher than a year earlier, while interest and leverage from the acquisitions still need to be absorbed [5]. The company guided fourth-quarter adjusted EPS to $2.13-$2.23 and an organic operating margin of about 20% [1]. Three tests come next: whether Global Water profit keeps growing and its margin widens as High-Tech growth slows, whether pricing protects gross margin if raw material costs keep rising, and whether a larger sales force in the institutional cleaning business stops the volume decline.
