Amphenol (APH) Q3 2026 Earnings: AI Shipments Beat Guidance, Orders Still Lead

Summary
Amphenol Q3 2026 sales of $10.23 billion beat the top of guidance by about 8.8% as IT datacom grew 30% sequentially, while a 1.19 book-to-bill kept orders ahead of shipments.
Amphenol (APH) Q3 2026 earnings showed AI interconnect shipments running far ahead of guidance while orders still exceeded shipments. The company released its third-quarter 2026 results and held its earnings call on October 28, 2026 [1][2]. Of the three operating questions that framed the prior view of the company, the first was clearly confirmed: AI orders converted into shipments well above guidance. CommScope's full-year outlook was raised again, although its quarterly sales were not disclosed. Operating margin and cash conversion, excluding one-time tariff recoveries, improved from the second quarter, while the Communications Solutions segment margin slipped slightly [1][2]. Overall, growth is now more concentrated in AI, profit and cash conversion improved together, and the fourth-quarter growth outlook slows markedly.
Amphenol is one of the world's largest makers of connectors and interconnect systems, including high-speed copper, fiber optic and power interconnect, antennas and sensors. Its customers are thousands of equipment makers, contract manufacturers, and telecom and cloud operators, and no single customer accounts for 10% or more of sales [5]. The company earns revenue when products ship, and the IT datacom market made up 48% of sales in the third quarter [2].
AI shipments beat guidance, led by data centers
Third-quarter sales came in well above company guidance. Net sales were $10.23 billion, up 65% year over year and 37% organically [1]. In July the company had guided to $9.3 billion to $9.4 billion [3], so the result was about 8.8% above the top of that range.
The IT datacom market drove most of the increase. It represented 48% of sales and grew 117% year over year, 77% organically and 30% sequentially, compared with the mid-teens sequential increase (about 15%) the company expected in July [2][4]. Management said the vast majority of the sequential growth was related to AI, which now represents about three quarters of IT datacom sales [2]. Based on its share of total sales, the market generated roughly $4.9 billion in the quarter, up about $1.1 billion sequentially; because the share is rounded, the estimate carries an error of about $100 million. The Communications Solutions segment posted sales of $6.58 billion, with 51% organic growth [1].
Management attributed the upside to meeting genuine customer demand and said nothing was pulled forward [2]; there is no independent evidence for that attribution yet. The company said that, excluding AI, organic growth across the company was still in the high teens (about 15% to 19%) [2].
Orders still exceed shipments
Orders kept rising even as shipments surged. Third-quarter orders were $12.17 billion, up 99% year over year and 13% sequentially, for a book-to-bill ratio (orders divided by sales in the quarter) of 1.19 [1][2]. In the second quarter, orders were $10.73 billion and book-to-bill was 1.23 [6]. Book-to-bill was above 1 in every end market except one [2].
These figures weaken an earlier concern that second-quarter orders included early or duplicate ordering that would fade once shipments ramped. Orders can be cancelled before shipment, so conversion still needs to be confirmed. The company also acknowledged that some customers place longer-dated orders to share the risk of capacity investments [2], and it did not disclose how much of book-to-bill reflects those longer lead times.
Progress at CommScope and in profit conversion
CommScope's full-year outlook was raised again. Amphenol lifted its 2026 sales expectation for CommScope from $4.6 billion to $5.1 billion and its accretion to adjusted EPS from $0.15 to $0.18 on a post-split basis [1][7]. Management said CommScope's operating margin is in the low 20s percent [2]. Quarterly CommScope sales were not disclosed, so it is unclear how much of the raise has already been realized. The communications networks market, where CommScope is exposed, declined 28% organically, and the company expects a further decline in the fourth quarter [2].
Operating margin and cash conversion both improved from the second quarter. Adjusted operating margin was 29.7%, including about $15 million from tariff recoveries [1]; excluding that benefit it was about 29.5%, and the company said the margin excluding recoveries rose about 70 basis points sequentially [2]. On the same basis the second-quarter margin was about 29% [8]. Free cash flow was $1.62 billion, about 80% of net income [1][2], compared with $1.21 billion in the second quarter [6]. On the negative side, the Communications Solutions segment margin fell from 33.6% in the second quarter to 33.1% [1], and the adjusted effective tax rate rose to 27.0% [1].
Conclusion
The quarter strengthens the view of Amphenol's growth engine, with profit and cash conversion improving alongside it. The company guided fourth-quarter sales to $10.3 billion to $10.5 billion, with IT datacom sales growing only mid-single digits (about 5%) sequentially [1][2], so the third quarter's 30% sequential pace should not be extrapolated. IT datacom is now close to half of company revenue, which makes sales more sensitive to the pace of AI deployments. The next tests are whether book-to-bill stays above 1 as growth slows, whether longer-dated orders convert on schedule, and whether margin can hold near 29.5% as new acquisitions dilute it.
