Summary

Chewy improved operating profit in Q2 2026, but temporary benefits lifted earnings and free cash flow fell as capital spending increased.

Chewy's fiscal 2026 second-quarter earnings, disclosed on September 9, 2026 through its release, Form 10-Q and earnings call, show improving operating efficiency but require a separate assessment of earnings upside and cash recovery.[1][2][3] Customer relationships continued to grow, while veterinary returns remain insufficiently verified; temporary benefits supported profit and capital spending reduced free cash flow, leaving long-term returns unresolved.

Chewy sells pet food, supplies and prescriptions to pet households and extends those relationships through veterinary services and related businesses. Merchandise gross profit, advertising and fulfillment efficiency affect earnings, while clinics, acquisitions and repurchases increase uses of cash.[1][2]

Operating profit improved, but the upside is not fully repeatable

Operating earnings increased, although temporary factors drove most of the upside to expectations. Sales rose 7.3% to $3.3302 billion; a $69 million increase in gross profit, less $32.5 million in additional selling, general and administrative expenses and $14.2 million in additional marketing, lifted operating income by $22.3 million to $92 million.[1]

Adjusted EBITDA margin reached 6.8%, including roughly $10 million in tariff and rebate benefits, with the call identifying more than $5 million in additional discrete benefits that together explained almost all the upside.[1][2][3] Deducting an illustrative $15 million produces a margin of about 6.36%, but the prior year also included nonrecurring reimbursements, so this is not a fully comparable margin; evidence supports operating efficiency improvement without establishing its sustained magnitude.

AI adds evidence of productivity opportunities, but its targets are not net profit. Management outlined roughly $50 million in annualized savings in fiscal 2027 and said some would offset cost increases or fund reinvestment, preventing a mechanical addition to the existing earnings trajectory.[3] Operating costs, service quality and retention must be tested together as deployment progresses.

Cash conversion weakened as capital uses exceeded internal recovery

Profit growth did not translate into higher quarterly free cash flow. Operating cash flow rose $3.5 million to $137.4 million, while capital expenditure increased $19.9 million to $47.9 million, reducing free cash flow by $16.4 million to $89.5 million.[1] Management attributed the decline to timing, but subsequent results must establish whether the cash returns.[3]

Positive free cash flow also did not cover all capital uses. First-half free cash flow was $160.3 million, net acquisition payments were $552.8 million and repurchases were $400 million, leaving a $792.5 million gap across those three items; debt proceeds and principal repayments were $811.7 million and $220 million, respectively, with other movements also contributing to the cash balance.[1] Those figures do not establish that a particular loan funded repurchases, but they raise the importance of investment returns.

Conclusion

Customer growth continued without establishing a step-change in relationship quality. Sales excluding acquisitions grew 5.7%; 21.705 million active customers included roughly 43,000 from SmartPak but excluded Modern Animal customers, while the 84.6% Autoship customer sales share also included purchases outside the subscription program.[1][2] Early veterinary integration progressed, but incremental customer contribution and standalone returns remain unverified.[3]

The quarter supports better operating efficiency while exposing near-term cash constraints. Adjusting temporary benefits in both periods, subsequent cash recovery and net veterinary and AI returns will determine durability; missing disclosure alone is insufficient to establish failed long-term investment recovery.
