Summary

Entergy's Q3 2026 adjusted EPS rose to $1.98 as rate actions beat higher financing costs, but industrial power sales growth slowed to 4.9%.

Entergy (ETR) third-quarter 2026 earnings showed rate increases outrunning higher financing costs, while industrial power sales growth slowed sharply. The company reported results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 in an 8-K earnings release, its 10-Q and an earnings call on November 2, 2026 [1][2][3]. Earlier research focused on three questions: whether rate actions could cover rising interest and share dilution, whether industrial load growth would turn into profit, and whether cash, credit and Louisiana approvals could keep pace with faster investment. Adjusted EPS was $1.98, compared with $1.53 a year earlier, and rate-related contributions exceeded the financing drag. Industrial sales grew only 4.9%. Cash and credit held up, but the improvement came mainly from large-customer advance payments, and approval of the Cottonwood plant acquisition slipped [1][2]. Overall, the quarter confirmed profit conversion, while the growth engine still needs to be verified.

Entergy serves about 3.1 million customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas through five regulated utility subsidiaries [4]. Its profit comes from allowed returns on approved assets. New investment enters customer rates through formula rate plans and riders, and fuel costs pass directly through to customers [4].

Rate actions outpaced financing costs, and the guidance floor rose

Approved rate actions were the main source of the $0.45 year-over-year increase in third-quarter adjusted EPS [1]. Retail electric price added $0.33 and return on construction work in progress added $0.09, for a combined $0.42. Higher interest and a higher share count reduced EPS by $0.19 and $0.09, a combined $0.28 [1]. The company estimated that weather added $0.24 in the quarter, compared with $0.06 a year earlier. Excluding that estimate, EPS was about $1.74 versus about $1.47, still up roughly 18% [1].

Rate support continues into the fourth quarter, but part of the third-quarter benefit will not repeat. Entergy Louisiana's formula rate plan change, which raises annual revenue by a net $222 million, took effect in September but remains subject to refund [2]. Entergy narrowed its 2026 adjusted EPS guidance from $4.25-$4.45 to $4.35-$4.45, after earning $3.89 in the first nine months [1]. Management said it will use part of the above-plan sales benefit for reliability spending [3]. The $1.5 billion of junior subordinated debentures issued in August and the shares delivered in September will enlarge the fourth-quarter financing drag [2].

Industrial sales growth slowed to 4.9%

Industrial sales were 17,055 GWh in the third quarter, up 4.9% year over year and below the 9.6% growth for the first nine months [1]. Second-quarter industrial sales were 17,164 GWh, up 9.9%, so third-quarter volume was slightly below that level [5]. The growth came from data center and primary metals customers [1]. The CFO attributed the slowdown to a high comparison base created by last year's ramp-ups and kept the outlook of roughly 16% annual industrial sales growth for 2026-2030 [3].

The sequential data only partly support management's explanation. Industrial volume did not grow from the second quarter, which indicates that no large new load began ramping during the period. Entergy does not report data center sales separately, so it remains unknown which customers drove the slowdown.

Sales volume still contributed heavily to profit, but mostly through weather and residential demand. Volume and weather together added $0.33 per share, of which weather accounted for about $0.18 of the year-over-year increase [1]. Weather-adjusted retail sales grew 4.5%, and residential sales grew 6.1% [1]. Industrial sales carry a lower unit margin, so the slowdown has limited effect on a single quarter's profit, but it matters for the pace at which the medium-term outlook is achieved.

Funding is ample, but the Cottonwood approval slipped

Operating cash flow was $4.957 billion in the first nine months, $1.024 billion more than a year earlier [1]. The increase came mainly from $1.172 billion of additional receipts of customer advance payments; excluding them, the rest of operating cash flow declined slightly [2]. Capital spending for the period was $7.743 billion, and trailing twelve-month FFO to adjusted debt was 16.8% [1]. Entergy Louisiana reached a settlement with LPSC staff on the generation for Meta's second data center, Evest, and a decision is expected in December. The Cottonwood acquisition hearing moved to February 2027, and the closing target moved to the first or second quarter of 2027 [2]. Entergy expects about $54.8 billion of capital spending for 2027-2030 and about $5.2 billion of equity issuance [2].

Conclusion

The quarter confirmed that Entergy's rate mechanisms still cover costs while financing accelerates, and EPS excluding weather still grew about 18%. The growth engine has diverged: industrial sales slowed, and volume-driven profit relied more on weather and residential demand. The cash improvement came mainly from customer advance payments, a contractual source of cash, and does not reflect stronger operating collections. The next tests are whether fourth-quarter industrial sales growth returns above 5%, whether full-year EPS reaches the $4.40 guidance midpoint, and how regulators rule on Evest and Cottonwood.
