Yum! Brands (YUM) Q3 2026 Earnings: Core Profit Up 1% After Pizza Hut Sale

Summary
Yum! Brands Q3 2026 core operating profit excluding Pizza Hut grew 1%, below its 8% target, as Taco Bell U.S. sales fell 4% and stranded costs weighed.
Yum! Brands (YUM) Q3 2026 earnings, released in an 8-K on November 3, 2026 for the quarter ended September 30, show that profit growth at the remaining business slowed sharply in the first report after the Pizza Hut sale [1]. Three questions framed the quarter: whether the remaining business could keep core profit growing at 8% or more after the sale, whether Taco Bell U.S. could confine the July lettuce recall to this quarter, and whether KFC could keep using new restaurants to offset weak same-store sales. Core operating profit excluding Pizza Hut grew only 1% in the quarter, compared with 8% in the second quarter [1][2]. Taco Bell U.S. same-store sales fell more than earlier disclosures showed, but its company-restaurant margin stayed within guidance; KFC openings kept supporting profit while its U.S. decline widened. Taken together, profit conversion is under pressure in the first quarters after the sale, while cash generation has not changed.
Yum! Brands runs three restaurant brands, KFC, Taco Bell and Habit Burger & Grill, and franchisees own and operate most of the restaurants [3]. The company earns mainly ongoing franchise fees based on restaurant sales, plus restaurant profit from a small number of company-owned stores [3].
Core profit excluding Pizza Hut grew only 1%
Yum! completed the Pizza Hut sale as planned, but profit growth at the remaining business fell far below the company's long-term target of at least 8% [1]. The two transactions closed on August 7 and September 1, with $2,380 million of sale proceeds [1]. Core operating profit excluding Pizza Hut (excluding Special Items and foreign currency effects) grew 1% in the third quarter and 6% year to date [1]. Diluted EPS excluding Special Items was $1.56, compared with $1.58 a year earlier [1].
Two sources explain the slowdown: Taco Bell, and corporate costs that stayed with Yum! after the sale. Based on the segment tables, KFC core profit rose by about $30 million, Taco Bell fell by about $12 million and net corporate and unallocated costs increased by about $15 million [1]. Management said that roughly $2.5 million per month of corporate G&A previously allocated to Pizza Hut will taper off only as transition services agreements expire by mid-2027. The company guided fourth-quarter G&A excluding Special Items to $285 million to $305 million [4].
Capital deployment followed the plan, but its support for EPS is arriving more slowly than the profit loss. The company had planned to use the proceeds first to repay its revolving credit facility and then to set aside most of the remainder for share repurchases [5]. Cash-flow arithmetic implies a third-quarter net revolver repayment of about $675 million (the period-end balance has not yet been disclosed) and repurchases of about $528 million, while average diluted shares fell from 281 million to 274 million [1]. Management said remaining cash will first address about $1.6 billion of maturing debt before excess capital is returned to shareholders [4].
Taco Bell U.S. sales fell further, but margins held within guidance
Taco Bell U.S. same-store sales fell 4% in the third quarter, worse than the -2% quarter-to-date figure through July 27 [1][6]. Division system sales fell 2%, and division operating profit was $255 million, down 5% year over year [1]. The U.S. company-owned restaurant margin was 20.5%, within the 19% to 21% range the company had given earlier [1][7].
Traffic began to recover at the end of September, but the extent of the recovery depends on full fourth-quarter results. Management said U.S. same-store sales are up about 1% quarter to date and about 3% over the trailing four weeks, and expects fourth-quarter restaurant-level margins of 21.5% to 23.5% [4]. These figures come from a summary of the earnings call, and the measurement window was not disclosed.
KFC openings offset weak same-store sales as the U.S. declined further
KFC's new restaurants again made up for weak same-store sales this quarter, but the gap they must fill grew. KFC had 35,421 restaurants, up 7%; system sales grew 6% excluding foreign currency, franchise and property revenues grew 7%, and division core operating profit grew 8% [1]. Same-store sales grew only 1%, compared with 3% a year earlier [1]. U.S. system sales fell 6%, compared with a 2% decline in the second quarter [1][8].
The U.S. decline weighs on profit more than its sales share suggests: the U.S. accounts for only 12% of KFC system sales, but store-level franchise fee rates there are higher than in master-franchise markets [1][3]. Management attributed the decline to tough comparisons with last year's promotions and to competition, without quantifying either effect [4].
Conclusion
This report shows that, after the Pizza Hut sale, Yum! growth depends more on KFC openings and profit conversion is under short-term pressure. The Taco Bell shock appears event-driven and the stranded costs have a stated end date, but full confirmation of both will take until 2027. Cash generation is unchanged: year-to-date operating cash flow was $1,398 million, in line with $1,393 million a year earlier [1]. The fourth quarter will test whether Taco Bell U.S. same-store sales turn positive for the full quarter, whether G&A lands within company guidance, and whether KFC same-store sales return to 2% or more while the U.S. decline narrows.
