Summary

VinFast Q2 2026 revenue rose 85.5% and revenue per EV held up, but gross margin fell to negative 62.8% and operating cash outflow rose about a third ahead of year-end funding expiries.

VinFast (VFS) Q2 2026 earnings, published on Form 6-K on October 19, 2026 for the quarter ended June 30, showed revenue holding up better than feared while gross margin and cash weakened [1]. Three questions framed the company going into the report: whether added volume converts into revenue, whether gross margin improves, and whether cash burn stays under control. Revenue per vehicle rose instead of falling, but mainly because fleet sales to related parties shrank and some discounts were booked as costs; gross margin slipped and operating cash outflow rose by about a third [1][2]. Most of the roughly US$2.3 billion of liquidity consists of shareholder commitments that expire before year-end, and part of the founder's new money went into a real-estate stake whose distributions are not expected before 2027 [1][2].

VinFast sells electric cars and two-wheelers, mainly in Vietnam, to individual buyers and affiliated fleets. About nine-tenths of revenue comes from vehicle sales, gross profit has always been negative, and losses are covered by money from parent Vingroup and founder Pham Nhat Vuong [3][1]. At the end of June the company sold its Vietnamese manufacturing business, VFTP, and now buys finished vehicles from it [1].

Change 1: Cash burn up a third as committed funding nears expiry

Operating cash outflow widened sharply in the second quarter. Net cash used in operating activities was VND31.2 trillion for the first half; after subtracting VND13.4 trillion for the first quarter, the second quarter used about VND17.9 trillion, up 33.9% from the first quarter [1][4]. Inventory absorbed VND18.9 trillion in the half, adding to the cash need [1]. Capital expenditure of US$233 million plus R&D of US$153.7 million came to about US$387 million, still below the top of the earlier US$300-400 million per quarter range, but management no longer provides formal capex guidance [2][1][5].

The decline in liquidity was modest, but its timing is tight. Available liquidity was VND58.6 trillion at June 30, down 10.1% from March 31; cash was only VND7.1 trillion, and remaining founder grants fell from VND17 trillion to VND9.5 trillion [1][6]. The equity line and the Vingroup credit line expire on November 1 and November 12, 2026, and the grant commitment runs to year-end [1]. Management said it expects to announce funding arrangements within months, with no details yet [2].

Change 2: Gross margin fell further on the recast basis

The free-charging charge shrank, yet gross margin did not improve. On a continuing-operations basis, first-quarter gross margin was recast from negative 73.6% to negative 58.9%, and the second quarter came in at negative 62.8% [7][1]. The free-charging program reduced revenue by about US$88 million, or 7.3% of revenue, compared with 20% in the first quarter [2][8].

Revenue deferral became the new drag on margin. Management said some overseas vehicles carried recognized cost while their revenue was deferred, equal to about 15% of cost of goods sold. Excluding charging, deferrals and inventory value adjustments, underlying gross margin was negative 28.7%, worse than negative 22.5% in the first quarter, although the first-quarter figure was not recast to the new basis [2][8]. VFTP bears the risk of idle capacity, but the effect of the contract-manufacturing arrangement on cost has not been quantified; the company also carries VND35.5 trillion of long-term payables for vehicles bought from VFTP [2][1].

Change 3: Revenue per vehicle was not diluted

Volume converted into revenue better than the company's earlier pricing guidance implied. EV deliveries were 70,085 in the second quarter, up 96% year over year, and vehicle sales revenue was VND28.8 trillion, up 92.7% [1]. Per EV delivered, that is about VND411 million, 11.3% higher than in the first quarter [1][9]. Management had expected higher sales to GSM to cut 2026 average selling prices by 10% to 15% [10].

The improvement does not show stronger pricing. The related-party share of EV deliveries fell from about 13% to about 6%, and revenue from doubled two-wheeler deliveries sits in the same line [1][11]. Incentives on vehicles with deferred revenue were booked as selling expenses, lifting selling, general and administrative expenses 116.9% from the first quarter; the amounts were not disclosed [1]. Preliminary Vietnam deliveries for January through September totaled 177,697 vehicles [12].

New focus: a real-estate stake bought with founder money

After the quarter ended, VinFast completed a large related-party acquisition. It paid VND30.9 trillion (about US$1.2 billion) to the founder and other shareholders for Ngoc Hoi, which holds 20% of a Hanoi urban development project. The price equals about 41% of June 30 total assets, was funded with Vingroup and founder money, and was settled in the third quarter [1]. Management expects the project to contribute earnings and cash distributions from 2027 and said that, on the company's projections, these would be enough to support the EV business [2]. Project sales progress and the accounting treatment have not been disclosed, so this funding source remains an expectation.

Conclusion

Growth continued this quarter, but profit conversion and cash generation look weaker than previously judged, and the benefits of the asset-light model have not yet appeared. The third quarter is the first full quarter of buying from VFTP. Recognition of deferred revenue, disclosure of contract-manufacturing cost and replacement of the credit lines expiring in November will determine whether this assessment strengthens or eases. Returns on the real-estate stake cannot be tested before 2027.
