Summary

Shopify says AI searches powered by its structured Catalog convert at 2.0 times the rate of scraped-data AI searches, though AI-channel sales remain small versus GMV.

Shopify (SHOP) said on its 2026-08-05 earnings call that AI shopping searches powered by its Catalog product data convert at 2.0 times the rate of AI searches that rely on scraped web data, though these transactions remain small relative to its GMV [1].

What Shopify sells and where Catalog fits

Shopify provides merchants with a full commerce software stack for opening an online store, taking payments, managing inventory and selling across channels. Its revenue comes mainly from two sources: monthly subscription fees, and merchant solutions revenue, led by Shopify Payments, that is charged on merchant sales. The second stream is tied directly to gross merchandise volume (GMV) on the platform.

Catalog is the product catalog Shopify built for AI shopping. It organizes merchants' product attributes, real-time pricing and inventory into structured data that AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google can read directly, so they can understand and recommend merchants' products inside a conversation [1]. Once a shopper picks a product, Universal Cart and Checkout Kit let the shopper add it to a cart and check out without leaving the conversation [3]. UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol), an open protocol Shopify helped build, lets AI assistants and developers read product data, create carts and complete checkout, while the whole flow still follows each merchant's existing checkout and fulfillment rules [1]. The application serves all Shopify merchants and outside AI platforms, and it sits in the company's core business of helping merchants sell.

Three steps in the public record

2025-11-04: the starting point. Shopify described how partners including ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot were using Catalog, Universal Cart and Checkout Kit for in-conversation product discovery and checkout. It gave only channel-wide figures for AI as a whole: since January of that year, AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores had grown about 7x and orders attributed to AI searches about 11x. Management also said this was still very early [3].

2026-05-05: the first Catalog-specific reading. For the first time, the company gave a quality measure specific to Catalog: AI search traffic powered by Catalog converted at 2.0 times the rate of general AI searches that rely on scraped web information. It also said discovery and selling could now happen inside ChatGPT, Copilot and Google [2].

2026-08-05: the advantage confirmed again. Shopify repeated the same conversion advantage and said it plans to bring Catalog and agentic shopping features into its own Shop app [1].

What the 2.0x conversion figure does and does not show

The 2.0x comparison is against searches that also come from AI assistants but work from scraped web information. It measures the conversion gap created by product data quality; a comparison with traditional search engines is a separate question. The company did not disclose the measurement period, denominator or sample size behind the figure [1].

The 2026-08-05 call also said that 75% of AI-attributed orders in the second quarter came from outside Shopify's top 100 categories. That suggests the products AI assistants surface are not concentrated in the leading categories, and long-tail merchants can be recommended as well [1]. This figure also comes without a total order count, so it only describes how orders are distributed across categories.

How AI shopping flows into GMV and revenue

The path to GMV and Shopify's transaction-based revenue is fairly direct. Management explained that the checkout page embedded in a ChatGPT conversation is the Shopify storefront itself, so economically it works exactly like a consumer buying on a Shopify store; it is simply one more sales surface [2]. If Catalog helps the same AI traffic turn into more orders, those orders count toward merchants' GMV and generate Shopify's transaction revenue in the usual way.

The company has not disclosed order counts, GMV or revenue contribution for the AI channel, and management acknowledges that this volume is still small relative to GMV [1]. The traffic and order multiples of about 7x, about 11x, 8x and nearly 13x use different base periods and definitions and cover all AI sources. They cannot be chained into a single growth curve, nor credited entirely to Catalog [2][3].

What is confirmed and what to watch

The confirmed operating change is that a structured product catalog makes the AI shopping channel convert noticeably better, and Shopify has cited that advantage on two consecutive quarterly calls. The AI channel's actual contribution to Shopify's total GMV and revenue has not been quantified separately. The next thing to watch is whether the company discloses, for the first time, absolute AI-channel orders or GMV and their share of total GMV.

And so it functions exact same way from an economic perspective as it would if any consumer is buying on a Shopify store. It's just a new surface area."
