Originally known as St. Mary Land & Exploration Company until 2010, the company has evolved from its early roots into a focused shale oil producer operating primarily in premier U.S. unconventional basins. SM Energy went public in 1992 and has built a portfolio concentrated in three core areas: the Midland Basin in West Texas, South Texas assets including the Eagle Ford and Austin Chalk formations, and more recently, the Uinta Basin in Utah following a major acquisition in 2024.
