Novorossiysk Grain Terminal Outage Raises Feed Cost Risk
A four-month outage at Russia's 7.1mtpa NKHP terminal may redirect wheat flows and raise unhedged feed and flour costs.
On August 26, 2026, NKHP said repairs at a damaged grain terminal in Russia's Port of Novorossiysk could take four months. The outage spans the September-December export campaign and may transmit from lost wheat-loading capacity into feed and flour purchasing costs.[1]
NKHP is one of three major grain terminals at Novorossiysk, with 7.1 million tonnes of annual capacity; the three together exceed 20 million tonnes. The loading gallery was among the damaged facilities. Chicago wheat rose 1.5% that day and corn rose 0.8%.[1][2]
How a terminal outage changes grain origin
Russia is normally a low-cost wheat source for Turkey, Egypt and North Africa. A terminal is the bottleneck that moves inland grain onto ships. Even if stocks exist, a damaged loading gallery prevents timely exports.
Four months at 7.1mtpa equals roughly 2.4 million tonnes of capacity, about 4.5% of Russia's 52.7 million tonnes of seaborne grain exports last season.[2] Buyers with fixed delivery dates may have to re-source from the EU, US, Argentina or Australia.
Kansas wheat futures rose 10.1% and corn 14.5% from August 10 to 26. The corn move also reflected weak US crop-tour findings, so it cannot be fully attributed to the Black Sea disruption.[3][4]
Companies that may be affected
Cal-Maine Foods (CALM) says feed is normally more than half of shell-egg farm production cost. It uses 2.2 million tonnes of finished feed annually, has 242,000 tonnes of corn and soybean-meal storage and ordinarily does not hedge long-term.[7] Its sensitivity table implies the August corn and meal moves could add about $0.033 per dozen, with an upper-bound annual pretax cost near $39 million. Grain-linked customer agreements offset part of that amount.
Pilgrim's Pride (PPC) purchased $809.7 million of feed ingredients in one quarter against only $3.1 million of net commodity derivative liabilities. Its US and Mexico operations use corn and soybean meal, while Europe uses wheat, soybean meal and barley.[8][9] A roughly 10% feed-basket move may enter cost of sales, although the wheat leg is more directly linked to the Black Sea and the corn leg to US crop conditions.
Flowers Foods (FLO) identifies flour as its primary baking ingredient. It had about $10.3 million of wheat-futures notional at fiscal year-end, and the entire hedge portfolio was designated for FY2026.[10] Persistent wheat prices may therefore appear in FY2027 purchasing and guidance, but the company does not disclose flour spend, preventing a reliable estimate.
How to verify the chain
Watch whether weekly Russian seaborne wheat loadings stay materially below roughly 1 million tonnes during the campaign and whether US export commitments to Egypt, Turkey, Algeria and similar buyers rise. Pilgrim's late-October Q3 filing should update feed purchases and derivatives, while Cal-Maine reports feed cost per dozen around October.
The chain weakens if NKHP restores partial loading early, other terminals absorb the gap, or a ceasefire normalizes shipping. If corn reverses after September US crop reports, CALM and PPC's corn cost cannot be attributed to this outage.
This is only a way to surface transmission chains you may have overlooked - it is not a stock recommendation.
