Marsh (MRSH) Q3 2026 Earnings: Thrive Savings Target Rises to $600M, Margin Flat

Summary
Marsh grew Q3 2026 underlying revenue 5% and lifted its Thrive savings target to about $600 million, but its adjusted operating margin stayed flat at 22.7%.
Marsh (MRSH) reported third-quarter 2026 earnings on October 15, 2026, for the quarter ended September 30, through a results release and an earnings call. Revenue broadly beat the prior benchmarks, but the adjusted operating margin did not improve [1]. Four questions framed the quarter: whether the insurance brokerage could hold 4% growth while premium rates fell, whether the health benefits business could recover from 3% growth, whether management consulting would land within the company's "mid-to-high single digits" guidance, and whether the Thrive savings program could lift third-quarter margin [2]. Underlying growth at the brokerage business, Marsh Risk, rose to 5%, health returned to 5%, and management consulting grew 14%, while the adjusted operating margin was unchanged from a year earlier [1]. Overall, growth was stronger than expected, new investment absorbed the profit conversion, and full-year margin expansion now depends on the fourth quarter.
Marsh is one of the world's largest insurance brokerage and risk advisory groups, serving companies, insurers and employers in 130 countries [3]. It earns brokerage commissions based on premiums, consulting and benefits fees charged per project or per covered employee, and basis-point fees on assets it manages; its main cost is people [3].
Thrive savings target rises by half while Q3 margin stays flat
In the third quarter, Marsh raised the annualized savings target for its Thrive program from about $400 million to about $600 million and raised the cost estimate from about $500 million to about $750 million [4]. Thrive is a three-year efficiency program that saves money by streamlining the organization, moving work to lower-cost service centers and centralizing operations [5]. Management said the expanded savings will fund sales hiring, new capabilities, the brand and technology [5]. Based on the company's figures, the ratio of cost to savings remains 1.25 times. Cumulative program costs reached $310 million through September 30, and these costs are excluded from adjusted profit [4].
The margin does not yet show these savings. The third-quarter adjusted operating margin was 22.7%, the same as a year earlier, and the nine-month margin was 28.1%, slightly below 28.2% a year earlier [1]. Fiduciary interest income was $100 million, down $9 million year over year, and adjusted corporate expense was $68 million, below the roughly $75 million guidance given in the second quarter [5][2]. Together these two items were a drag of only about $6 million, so the flat margin more likely reflects savings and new investment offsetting each other. Marsh does not disclose realized savings or reinvestment amounts, so this is an inference.
The change means a larger savings target with later delivery. Adjusted EPS rose 10% to $2.03, driven mainly by 6% growth in adjusted operating income and a lower share count [1]. The CEO confirmed that third-quarter margins were flat, and the company still guides to margin expansion for the full year [5]. Because the nine-month margin is slightly lower year over year, that commitment needs clear expansion in the fourth quarter.
Management consulting beats guidance for a second quarter
Management consulting revenue was $1.013 billion in the third quarter, up 14%, above the "mid-to-high single digits" guidance the company gave in the second quarter [1][2]. The business grew 13% in the second quarter [2], and management again named Quotient, its AI strategy practice, as the fastest-growing part of the portfolio [5]. Demand came from AI transformation, cost transformation and merger integration work, and private equity firms are also hiring Marsh to serve their portfolio companies [5].
This confirmation has clear limits. The CFO said the quarter benefited from success fees that had been expected in the fourth quarter, and that full-year growth is on pace for high single digits, implying roughly flat fourth-quarter revenue [5]. The success-fee amount was not disclosed, and the CFO said it did not explain the preponderance of growth [5]. The Consulting segment's adjusted operating margin was 22.1%, flat year over year, so faster revenue growth has not yet produced a higher margin [1].
Brokerage and health also improved, for one quarter
The brokerage and health businesses also beat their prior benchmarks, but only for one quarter. Primary commercial insurance rates fell 5% in the third quarter, a smaller decline than the 6% decline in the second quarter, while Marsh Risk grew 4% in the U.S. and Canada and 6% internationally [5][1]. Because the smaller rate decline coincided with the faster growth, the contribution of new business cannot be quantified. Health returned to 5% growth, and the wealth business grew 8% even as assets under management were flat sequentially at $843 billion [1][5].
Conclusion
The quarter strengthens the view of Marsh's growth while pushing back confirmation of profit conversion. On growth, all three main revenue lines met or beat their benchmarks, although part of the consulting result came from success-fee timing. On profit, the larger savings are currently absorbed by investment, and full-year margin expansion depends entirely on the fourth quarter. On cash, operating cash flow for the first nine months was $2.3 billion, down from $3.1 billion a year earlier, reflecting the Greensill litigation settlement, higher receivables and restructuring payments [4]. The next tests are whether the fourth-quarter margin expands year over year, whether consulting holds roughly flat, and whether the brokerage keeps growing at least 4% as rates keep falling.
