Summary

MillerKnoll Q1 FY2027 sales fell 3.4% and full-year sales guidance was cut, while gross margin rose to 41.7% with 180 basis points from a one-time tariff refund.

MillerKnoll (MLKN) reported fiscal 2027 first-quarter results on September 22, 2026, through an 8-K press release and an earnings call covering June 1 to August 29, 2026. Revenue came in below the company's own outlook while profit and cash were better than expected [1][2]. Earlier analysis of the company centered on four questions: the gap between contract orders and shipments, the margin cost of retail growth, the net balance between tariff costs and price increases, and whether operating cash flow could cover the higher planned capital spending. This quarter North America Contract shipments fell and full-year sales guidance was cut, while retail margin, gross margin and operating cash flow all improved with help from a one-time tariff refund. The parameters of the operating model changed but the relationships did not. The company kept its full-year adjusted EPS range of $1.85 to $2.15, which means tariff refunds, pricing and cost control filled the revenue gap [1][2].

MillerKnoll sells Herman Miller, Knoll, DWR and other brands to corporate office projects and to consumers. In fiscal 2026 the contract segments produced 71.2% of net sales, with orders entering backlog before they ship and become revenue; the retail segment produced 28.8% through company-owned stores, e-commerce and catalogs [3].

Tariff refunds and pricing lifted gross margin to 41.7%

Consolidated gross margin was 41.7% in the quarter, against 38.5% a year earlier and 38.8% for all of fiscal 2026 [1][4]. The company quantified IEEPA tariff refunds for the first time: it recognized $16.5 million of refunds in the quarter, worth 180 basis points of gross margin. Excluding the refunds, adjusted gross margin still rose 150 basis points year over year, which management attributed to April price increases partly offset by inflation [2]. Adjusted EPS excluding the refunds was $0.42, below $0.45 a year earlier [1][2]. The net balance between tariff costs and pricing has turned positive, but the advantage is thin. Management expects inflation to create a 20 to 30 basis point headwind in the second quarter, new US-Canada tariffs to cost about $0.07 per share over the next three quarters, and second-quarter gross margin to fall back to 38.3% to 39.3% [1][2].

Contract orders caught up with shipments, but North America shipments fell

Contract-segment orders of $664.9 million roughly matched shipments of $662.4 million, pausing the fiscal 2026 pattern in which backlog supported revenue [1]. The cause was lower shipments rather than higher orders. North America Contract orders of $483.7 million fell 1.6% organically against a prior-year base already depressed by orders pulled forward into fiscal 2025; North America Contract net sales of $505.6 million fell 5.3%, and International Contract net sales fell 6.4% while its orders grew 17.9% organically [1][2]. Consolidated net sales of $923.4 million fell 3.4% year over year, below the $928 million low end of the June outlook; backlog fell from $678.8 million at the end of May to $669 million; and full-year net sales guidance was lowered to $3.88 billion to $4.03 billion [1][2][5]. Management attributed the North America softness to timing, with healthcare and government customers taking longer to place orders, and said orders in the first three weeks of September were up 9% year over year [2].

Retail improved margins while opening stores

Retail net sales of $261.0 million grew 2.6% year over year, comparable sales were flat, and the growth came from new stores [1][2]. Adjusted operating margin reached 7.0%, up 580 basis points, of which 410 basis points came from the tariff refunds; the remaining 170 basis points of improvement came from pricing and cost savings, partly offset by new-store costs [1][2]. The company opened 4 stores in the quarter, bringing the total to 97 [1]. The fiscal 2026 decline of 140 basis points in retail gross margin stopped on an operating basis, but the 50.4% segment gross margin includes an unallocated refund benefit, so durability depends on the second quarter [1][2][6].

Operating cash flow covered investment and the dividend

Operating cash flow was $49.1 million, against $9.4 million a year earlier; capital spending of about $33 million ran at the pace of the $125 million to $135 million full-year plan; and the quarterly dividend was unchanged [1][2]. The improvement includes one-time refund cash and a $43.1 million decline in accounts receivable, while inventory rose $26.3 million as the company stocked up ahead of Canada tariffs and debt did not fall [1][2]. Measured against the fiscal 2026 baseline, when operating cash flow less capital spending left only about $77.6 million, this is a useful quarterly observation that does not yet prove the constraint has eased [7].

Conclusion

This report weakens the view of the growth engine and strengthens the view of profit conversion and cash generation, with the latter two carrying one-time factors. The next quarter's tests are whether contract orders turn positive year over year on a clean base and push backlog back above $669 million, whether gross margin without refunds holds within the company's guided range, and whether operating cash flow keeps covering investment and the dividend while reducing debt. The main uncertainties are how much refund cash has been received, the absence of segment-level backlog disclosure, and the fact that the September order rebound is partial-period data.
