Summary

The Panama Canal restored a 10th daily Neopanamax slot and a 49 ft draft. Fewer Cape detours could cut VLGC ton-miles, while lower auction fees offset part of it for Dorian LPG.

The Panama Canal Authority raised daily transit capacity at the Neopanamax locks to 10 slots on September 28, 2026, according to Sina Finance 7x24.[1] With the extra Panama Canal Neopanamax slot, LPG carriers that had detoured around the Cape of Good Hope may return to the canal, and VLGC rates could come under pressure.

What the canal authority changed

The same day, the authority set the maximum draft for the Neopanamax locks at 14.94 meters (about 49 feet) until further notice.[2] Both moves ease restrictions: from September 3, the new locks had only nine slots a day and a 48-foot maximum draft.[3]

Slot auction prices rose sharply during the restrictions. According to Maritime Executive, SK Gas, the LPG trading arm of South Korea's SK Group, paid a record $5.3 million for the right to move one ship through the locks on September 1.[4]

Background: LPG shipping and the Panama route

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is mainly propane and butane. The U.S. Gulf Coast is a major exporter, shipping large volumes to Asian markets such as Japan and South Korea. The ships that carry it are very large gas carriers (VLGCs). According to European Maritime Finance, the Panama Canal carries more than a fifth of global LPG.[5]

There are three routes from the U.S. Gulf to Asia. A round trip via the Panama Canal takes about 58 days, via the Suez Canal about 81 days, and around the Cape of Good Hope at Africa's southern tip about 88 days.[6]

The canal's locks run on lake water; when it is short, the authority cuts slots and draft. Without enough slots, shipowners either bid high in auctions or sail around the Cape. According to a Vortexa search snippet, about 43% of U.S.-to-Asia LPG voyages went around the Cape in April 2026, the highest share since October 2016.[7]

Shipping measures demand in ton-miles: cargo times distance. Longer routes tie ships up for more days, leaving fewer available and pushing rates higher.

From canal slots to VLGC daily earnings

First, one more slot a day adds roughly 365 transits a year. With more slots, auction prices for the category that includes LPG and LNG carriers could fall.

Second, as auction prices drop and waits shorten, U.S.-to-Asia VLGC voyages could shift from the Cape back to Panama, saving about 30 days per round trip.[6]

Third, the research material estimates that if a third of the new slots go to VLGCs, about 120 extra transits a year would free roughly 3,600 ship-days, about 2% of the global fleet of 429 VLGCs.[8] A similar case occurred in 2024, when Drewry expected ton-mile demand to fall in the second half as the canal authority added transit slots.[9]

Fourth, the freed capacity would pressure spot rates, measured as time-charter-equivalent earnings (TCE) per ship per day. On the other hand, owners using the canal would no longer pay auction fees of hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars, so realized earnings could fall less than headline rates.

The effect on VLGC owners is therefore two-way, mostly negative, and could start to show from the fourth quarter of 2026.

Company that could be affected

Dorian LPG (LPG) is a U.S.-listed VLGC owner whose roughly 17 ships trade mainly in the spot market through the Helios pool. Revenue for the fiscal year ended March 2026 was $481.5 million, all from VLGC chartering. In the latest quarter, revenue was $187.9 million and operating income was $142.7 million.[10]

On its August call, management said disruption to Middle Eastern energy cargoes increased congestion at the Panama Canal, pushing many vessels around the Cape of Good Hope and further amplifying ton-mile demand. BLPG rates approached record levels near $175,000 a day entering the current quarter.[11] Management also said Panama Canal transit fees are putting some downward pressure on realized rates.[11] On the May call, it said headline TCE rates do not reflect auction fees of $200,000 to $4 million per transit.[12]

Dorian is exposed from both directions. The research material estimates that fewer ton-miles could take $5,000 to $15,000 a day off spot TCE. Across about 6,200 fleet days a year, that is about $31 million to $93 million, or 5% to 16% of annualized operating income of about $571 million. On the other side, each $1 million drop in auction fees, spread over a 58-day canal voyage, adds about $17,000 a day of earnings. Net, the result could be a mid-single-digit percentage decline in operating income, depending on how many voyages switch to the canal.

The stock closed at $54.36 on September 28, up 1.74%, on 693,000 shares, above the 430,000 to 540,000 shares a day traded from September 23 to 25. It is up 9.2% over one month, with a market cap of about $2.33 billion.[10]

What to watch

Auction prices and routing should respond within two to six weeks, meaning October voyages. First, watch the October canal auctions: whether slot prices for the LPG and LNG category fall below $1 million per transit from the $5.3 million record set on September 1.[4] Then watch whether the Cape share of U.S.-to-Asia LPG voyages falls from about 43% in the fourth quarter, and whether the U.S. Gulf-to-Japan VLGC rate (BLPG3) trends down through October and November while U.S. export volumes hold.[7]

At the company level, Dorian's fiscal second-quarter 2027 results in early November will give forward-booked TCE for the third quarter. BW LPG (BWLP) third-quarter results in late November will give fourth-quarter guidance, which can be compared with the third-quarter level of about $88,000 a day.[13] The full-quarter effect will show in Dorian's results around February 2027.

The chain breaks if El Niño deepens the water shortage in Gatun Lake and the authority cuts slots or draft again in the fourth quarter; if container ship and tanker demand absorbs the extra slot, keeping LPG auction prices above $1 million and the Cape share unchanged; if disruption in the Strait of Hormuz worsens and pulls more Asian demand onto U.S. LPG, lifting rates despite shorter routes; or if Dorian or BW LPG reports fourth-quarter realized TCE above the third quarter.

This only helps you find overlooked transmission chains. It is not a stock recommendation.
