GSEO (3406.TW) and 3M's Amazon Warrant: EBO Connector Orders

Published 7 min read

Summary

Amazon's $6 billion purchase-linked 3M warrant adds a second cloud customer for EBO connectors; GSEO, 3M's ferrule molder, could gain orders from 2027.

Genius Electronic Optical (3406.TW), the Taiwanese lens maker that molds precision parts for 3M's Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) connectors, could start receiving Amazon-driven orders from 2027. On October 19, 2026, a 3M Form 8-K showed that Amazon received a purchase-linked warrant that vests fully once its cumulative purchases reach $6 billion.[1][2]

What the 3M–Amazon warrant says

The warrant lets an Amazon (AMZN) subsidiary buy up to 3.162 million shares of 3M (MMM) common stock at $164.89 per share within seven years.[3]

In the filing's words, "85% of the Warrant Shares will vest subject to payments from Amazon for optical connectivity and other Data Center products," "with full vesting once cumulative payments reach $6 billion."[1] Spread over seven years, that is about $0.86 billion a year.[1]

The same day, 3M announced a collaboration with Taiwan's Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) on EBO connectors.[4] Earlier, on October 15, 3M had announced a roughly $150 million investment in a GSEO private placement.[5]

Background: warrants, ferrules and EBO

A warrant lets its holder buy a company's shares at a fixed price within a set period. Tying vesting to purchases means the more a customer buys, the more of that right it earns.

Data-center servers and switches are linked by optical fiber that plugs into each faceplate through a connector. The small precision part inside that aligns the fibers is the ferrule.

Common MT/MPO multi-fiber connectors press two fiber end faces together, so slight misalignment or dust weakens the signal. 3M's EBO connector instead expands the light beam and refocuses it at the other end, so the two sides do not need to touch. Its key component is a precision-molded ferrule with built-in optical structures.

EBO is still early. On its July second-quarter call, 3M said Microsoft Azure had qualified it, guided to $40-50 million of 2026 EBO revenue, and sized the market at about $1 billion.[6]

3M plans to double EBO capacity in 2026 and again within the following 12-18 months: "We're rapidly scaling production capacity both internally and externally."[6] External scaling includes licensees such as US Conec, signed in December 2024.[7]

How Amazon's 3M orders could reach a Taiwan molder

Step 1. The agreement takes EBO from one large cloud customer, Microsoft Azure, to two.[1][6] If fully used, about $0.86 billion a year would far exceed EBO's $40-50 million of 2026 revenue, but it also covers "other Data Center products," and 3M has not disclosed the EBO share.[1][6]

Step 2. More orders need more capacity, which 3M is adding in its own plants and through licensees and contract partners.[6][7]

Step 3. GSEO is 3M's external precision-molding partner. 3M is taking about a 4.7% stake to support manufacturing of "EBO ferrules, co-packaged optics solutions and related optical interconnect applications." GSEO has no revenue from 3M today.[4][8]

Step 4. An estimate built on stated assumptions: if half of the $6 billion is EBO, and molded ferrules and lenses make up 10-20% of a connector's value, roughly $43-86 million a year of orders could flow to GSEO.[1][9]

Step 5. The losers are diffuse. Amazon links that adopt EBO would displace physical-contact MT/MPO connectors and Corning's (GLW) MMC/PRIZM ferrule formats. But Corning cited a multi-billion-dollar Amazon optical connectivity agreement on its July call, so its fiber and cable volume remains,[10] and Amphenol (APH) is an EBO multi-source agreement member.[11] No single loss stands out.

Genius Electronic Optical (3406.TW): possible revenue from 3M EBO ferrules

Genius Electronic Optical (3406.TW) is a Taiwanese smartphone-lens maker. In this chain it precision-molds EBO ferrules for 3M.[4]

GSEO's 2025 revenue was about NT$24.99 billion, up 7.8% year on year, or about $778 million.[9] In the private placement, 3M is subscribing for 5,534 lots (thousand-share units) of new shares at NT$869.6 each, about 4.7% of the company.[8]

On that estimate, $43-86 million a year would equal 5.5-11% of GSEO's 2025 revenue, possibly from 2027.[9] At a lens-maker margin of 25-30%, operating profit might rise by about NT$0.35-0.8 billion, about 8-15% of its earnings power. This is only an estimate: 3M has not disclosed the order split and also licenses EBO to makers such as US Conec, so GSEO's share depends on 3M.[7]

GSEO closed at NT$1,045 on October 19, down 3.69%. It rose 4.69% on October 15, when the placement was announced, is up about 147.9% over a year, and is worth about NT$118 billion.[12] Both the Amazon warrant and the 3M–GSEO collaboration announcement came after Taiwan's October 19 close.[1][4]

What to watch next

The first signal is 3M's third-quarter call on October 20.[13] Watch whether management lifts 2026 or 2027 EBO revenue expectations above $40-50 million, dates Amazon deliveries, and splits the $6 billion between EBO and other products.

Second, GSEO's monthly revenue (around the 10th of each month) and its third- and fourth-quarter results: look for an optical-communications line or 3M-related capital spending, and for the placement to close in the fourth quarter of 2026. Revenue is expected from 2027, so it will show in 2027 monthly revenue and first-half results.

Third, 3M's 10-Q and 10-K filings will disclose the warrant's contra-revenue charge, which tracks Amazon's cumulative payments and so reveals the pace of purchases.

The chain breaks if 3M says most of the $6 billion is non-optical (films, cable accessories, power); if 3M routes Amazon's EBO ferrules to its own plants or licensees such as US Conec, or GSEO's 2027 guidance shows no optical-communications revenue; if the placement fails to close in the fourth quarter of 2026; or if Amazon's next AI network adopts Corning's MMC/PRIZM format or co-packaged optics that bypass faceplate connectors, leaving 3M's receipts well short of $6 billion.

This piece only maps possibly overlooked transmission chains. It is not a stock recommendation.
