Summary

Cintas grew Q1 fiscal 2027 organic revenue 8.9%, up from 7.8% a year earlier, lifted rental gross margin 110 bp to 50.8% and raised full-year guidance.

Cintas (CTAS) reported fiscal 2027 first-quarter earnings on September 23, 2026, in an 8-K release and on its earnings call, and both growth and profit conversion came in stronger than at the time of its annual report [1][2]. The quarter ended August 31, 2026. Four questions frame the business: whether converting new customers can sustain growth, whether a high share of incremental revenue stays in profit, whether first aid and fire protection can keep outgrowing the core, and how much profit and cash the pending UniFirst acquisition absorbs before closing. This quarter, organic growth accelerated, rental margins rose sharply, first aid held its pace, and transaction costs ran above their earlier level. The relationships in the operating model are unchanged, while two parameters, growth and incremental margin, moved up. Workday and comparison effects will still cause quarter-to-quarter swings in the second half.

Cintas provides businesses with uniforms, mats, restroom supplies, first aid kits and fire extinguishers as a bundled service. Route drivers visit each week to swap and restock items, customers pay weekly, and Uniform Rental and Facility Services is the main business [4]. Profit depends mainly on route density: the more customers and products on the same route, the more thinly the fixed costs of drivers, trucks and laundry plants are spread.

Change one: organic growth accelerates to 8.9%

Cintas's acceleration this quarter came from volume. First-quarter revenue was $3.01 billion, up 10.9%. The quarter had one more workday than a year earlier, so workday-adjusted growth was 9.2%, and after removing a 0.3-point contribution from acquisitions and foreign exchange, company-defined organic growth was 8.9% [1]. That reading is 110 basis points above the 7.8% of the first quarter of fiscal 2026 [3].

Management attributed the acceleration to volume and said pricing contributed the same as in prior years. The company said new business, customer retention and cross-selling each improved slightly, and that sales cycles have not lengthened [2]. Organic growth in uniform rental was 8%, against 7.3% a year earlier, which was the weakest comparison of that year [2]. None of these attributions came with quantitative metrics.

The company raised its fiscal 2027 revenue guidance from $12.10 billion to $12.25 billion to a range of $12.15 billion to $12.27 billion [1]. Management said growth will move around quarter to quarter within a mid- to high-single-digit range [2].

Change two: rental gross margin rises 110 basis points

Cintas's rental business converted new revenue into profit much more efficiently. Uniform rental gross margin was 50.8% in the first quarter, compared with 49.7% a year earlier and 50.0% for fiscal 2026 as a whole [1][5]. Based on the segment table, the segment's operating margin was about 25.1%, compared with about 23.9% a year earlier [1].

The margin gain came while energy costs rose. Energy expense was 1.8% of revenue, 10 basis points higher than a year earlier [2]. Management attributed the gross-margin improvement to leverage from revenue growth and to technology investments [2]. The extra workday added 50 basis points to consolidated operating margin and UniFirst transaction expenses subtracted 50 basis points; excluding both, operating margin still improved by 90 basis points [2].

Operating income was $711.9 million, up 15.2%. Management raised its full-year implied incremental margin from 30% to 32% to a range of 32% to 34%, and raised adjusted EPS guidance to $5.45 to $5.54 [1][2]. Management noted that the third quarter has one fewer workday and the fourth quarter faces a higher comparison [2].

Change three: pre-closing transaction costs increase

Pre-closing costs for the UniFirst acquisition rose noticeably this quarter. First-quarter transaction expenses were $14.4 million, a $0.03 hit to EPS, close to the $16.1 million recorded for all of fiscal 2026 [1][7]. Regulatory review in the U.S. and Canada is still under way, and the company expects to close before the end of 2026 [1][2]. The composition of the expenses was not disclosed.

The transaction is not currently constraining cash allocation. Operating cash flow was $572.3 million and free cash flow was $464.8 million. Capital expenditures were 3.6% of revenue, cash buybacks of $315.7 million exceeded the prior-year quarter, and the dividend was raised 15.6% [1][2]. Part of the cash flow came from timing changes in working capital.

First Aid and Safety held its established pace, with organic growth of 14.2% and gross margin of 57.6%, up 80 basis points, close to the 14.0% and 57.7% in the annual report [2][6]. Fire protection grew 9.2% organically, and its SAP system is still in pilot [2].

Conclusion

The results strengthen the view of Cintas's growth and profit conversion: volume is growing faster, a larger share of incremental revenue stays in profit, and cash generation covers both reinvestment and shareholder returns, but this is one quarter of results. The second quarter has the same number of workdays as a year earlier, and organic growth in that prior-year quarter was 8.6%, so it will test whether the acceleration holds [3]. The main uncertainties are the lack of quantitative metrics behind the growth attribution, the undisclosed workday effect on rental gross margin, and the timing and cost of the UniFirst closing.
