Cerence (CRNC): About 100,000 xUI-Powered Cars Are Now on the Road

Summary
Cerence first disclosed about 100,000 xUI-powered cars on the road on August 6, 2026, and placed the in-car assistant's revenue impact in fiscal 2027 and beyond.
On its August 6, 2026 earnings call, Cerence Inc. (CRNC) disclosed for the first time how many cars carry xUI, its in-car voice assistant: about 100,000 xUI-powered cars are on the road, while the company places the product's revenue contribution in fiscal 2027 and beyond [1].
What xUI is and how Cerence gets paid for it
Since separating from speech-technology company Nuance, Cerence has done one thing: sell in-car voice interaction technology to automakers. Its revenue comes from per-vehicle software license fees paid by carmakers, connected-service subscriptions generated when owners use cloud features, and engineering service fees for integrating the software into each vehicle program.
xUI is the current flagship. It sits in the head unit of production vehicles so that drivers and passengers can ask for things in ordinary speech: set a destination, place a call, operate a vehicle function, ask a question about the trip. The assistant works out what the request requires and orchestrates large models, small models and agents across in-car silicon and the cloud to either carry out the task or answer out loud. Automakers put their own brand on it and deliver it as part of the vehicle's interaction layer, which places it at the center of Cerence's business.
Nearly three years from proof of concept to production vehicles
On the November 27, 2023 call, the assistant was still a laboratory-stage effort. The company was building its own automotive-grade large language model and in-car AI computing platform, delivered more than 15 proof-of-concept programs globally in a single quarter, and named hallucinations, compute cost, latency and unreliable in-car connectivity as unsolved problems [2].
Fiscal 2024 was the first year it converted into orders in volume: 10 customer wins and six program launches, with customers including Volkswagen, Renault, Skoda, Audi and Smart [3]. In May 2025 the product was formally launched under the xUI name, and in the same quarter the Mercedes-Benz Virtual Assistant inside the fourth generation of MBUX entered production, with Cerence's technology serving as the core input and output mechanism across 25 languages [4]. The application was first disclosed as Cerence Assistant; after large language models, an on-device small model and camera input were added, it was renamed xUI. The users it serves and the tasks it completes have not changed.
By February 2026, xUI had accumulated five significant customer programs [5]. Three months later, BYD became the first customer to put xUI into production vehicles, with cars rolling off the line, and the company characterized the changeover as a multi-year rollout [6]. As of the August 6, 2026 call, about 100,000 cars fitted with xUI were on the road [1].
What the 100,000 figure does and does not measure
The latest disclosure switches the readout from programs in hand to vehicles already delivered. The roughly 100,000 figure counts cars on the road that are equipped with xUI, across multiple brands and regions [1]. The previously disclosed five significant customer programs measure work still in progress [5]; those become part of the vehicle count only once a model reaches production and cars come off the line.
The number is also not a usage figure. A vehicle carrying the assistant says nothing about whether occupants use it or how often. The company has not broken the total down by brand or model, so there is no way to tell whether it is concentrated in a few programs or already spread across many.
How vehicles on the road could turn into revenue
The assistant is licensed to automakers on a per-program basis, and revenue accumulates as equipped vehicles are built and delivered. A larger installed base means a larger base of per-unit billing, and the pricing attached to the new generation of the product enters that calculation as well. The sequence management gave is: more customer programs enter production, per-model delivery volumes grow, xUI revenue begins ramping at the end of 2026, and the impact shows up clearly in fiscal 2027 and beyond [1].
Timing is the only part of this chain the company has spelled out. The corresponding financial readouts would be license and connected-services revenue in the automotive business and the related per-unit value (PPU), and Cerence has not disclosed either figure specifically for xUI, nor connected the count of vehicles on the road to any financial line item. The direction is inferable, but the relationship has not yet appeared in any reported period's numbers, so it cannot be assumed that current revenue or gross margin has already improved because of it.
What is confirmed and what to watch next
What is confirmed is the change on the delivery side: from proofs of concept to production cars coming off the line, the assistant has covered the full distance from demonstration to public roads, and the roughly 100,000 vehicles are the most direct measure of that [1]. What has not been separately quantified is how much money those vehicles bring back. The next readout that could change the assessment is a Cerence disclosure, once the revenue ramp begins, of xUI-specific revenue or per-unit value that ties the vehicles already on the road to actual billing.
