Carnival (CCL) Q3 2026 earnings: net yields beat, outlook raised

Summary
Carnival's Q3 2026 constant-currency net yields rose 2.4%, over a point above June guidance, lifting full-year guidance while North American ticket prices fell.
Carnival (CCL) reported fiscal 2026 third-quarter results on September 29, 2026, for the three months ended August 31, 2026, in its earnings release and Form 10-Q. Net yields and unit costs both came in better than the company's June guidance, and Carnival raised its full-year earnings outlook [1][2]. The Carnival Q3 2026 earnings update mattered for four open questions: whether yields cut in June because of the Middle East conflict would recover, whether the cost savings would last, whether the investment-grade balance sheet would turn into shareholder returns, and whether measured capacity growth and company-owned destinations could hold up against Caribbean supply growth. Yields recovered by more than guided. Costs beat guidance again but are not yet proven to be structural savings. Debt principal fell and buybacks accelerated, while reconstructed leverage was roughly flat. Capacity stayed on plan and onboard spending grew quickly, but the contribution of the private destinations cannot be separated. Overall, the European shock looks transitory for now, and pricing pressure has moved to North America.
Carnival is the world's largest cruise operator. Its brands include Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Costa Cruises, and it had 94 ships at the end of fiscal 2025, with North America accounting for about 64% of capacity [3]. The company sells berths measured in available lower berth days (ALBDs, berths multiplied by days in service). In fiscal 2025 it earned $17,419 million of passenger ticket revenue and $9,202 million of onboard and other revenue [4].
Net yields beat guidance and the full-year outlook rose
Carnival's constant-currency net yields rose 2.4% in the third quarter to $255.09 per ALBD, against $249.11 a year earlier, more than a point better than June guidance [1]. Net yield is revenue per berth day after the main variable costs such as commissions and transportation. The company raised its full-year constant-currency net yield growth guidance to about 2.3% from about 1.75% in June [1][5]. Occupancy was 111.8%, essentially flat with the prior year, and constant-currency adjusted gross margin grew 3.9%, faster than 1.5% capacity growth [1][2].
The recovery was uneven by region. The 10-Q shows that higher European ticket prices added $75 million of passenger ticket revenue, while lower North American ticket prices subtracted $40 million; higher onboard spending across the company added $104 million and covered that gap [2]. The North American price decline is consistent with the 27% two-year growth in Caribbean capacity from other cruise lines that management cited in June, but the quarterly report does not give a reason [6][2].
Higher yields offset the fuel price increase. Third-quarter adjusted EBITDA was $2,993 million, $110 million above June guidance, and adjusted EPS was $1.43 against guidance of about $1.35 [1][5]. Carnival said full-year operational improvement of more than $150 million offset a $150 million impact from higher fuel prices, and it raised full-year adjusted EPS guidance to about $2.24 from $2.22 [1][5]. Because fuel expense rose to $615 million from $451 million, operating income still fell $52 million to $2,220 million [1].
Whether the yield recovery lasts still has to be confirmed. Carnival guides fourth-quarter constant-currency net yields up about 1.7%, or about 2.3% excluding the effect of loyalty program accounting [1]. The company says booked occupancy and pricing for 2027 are at record levels but did not disclose a booked percentage, and 2027 also carries an approximately 0.4 percentage point headwind from loyalty program accounting [1][6].
Progress: cost savings held and buybacks outran the June plan
Unit costs beat guidance for a second straight quarter. Adjusted cruise costs excluding fuel per ALBD rose 1.8% in constant currency in the third quarter, one point better than June guidance, and full-year guidance fell to about 2.2% from about 2.4% [1][5]. Total costs on this measure still rose 3.3%, faster than capacity, and selling and administrative expense rose 7.1% [1][2].
Cash went to both debt reduction and buybacks. Debt principal was $24,559 million at quarter end, and Carnival redeemed $500 million of 7% notes during the quarter [2]. The company repurchased 20.3 million shares for $549 million in the quarter and about $1.2 billion year to date; in June, management had said the second-half buyback pace would be below the first half's $450 million [2][1][6]. Because third-quarter EBITDA was flat year over year, reconstructed net debt to adjusted EBITDA remained about 3.1 times.
Conclusion
The quarter shows that the European shock behind the June yield cut has eased, and yields and costs together absorbed the fuel increase, so both growth and profit conversion ran ahead of the company's own guidance. Cash generation remained solid, with nine-month operating cash flow of $5,303 million against $4,700 million a year earlier [1]. The main uncertainty is North American pricing: ticket prices have already fallen, and whether onboard spending keeps covering that gap depends on whether fourth-quarter yield guidance of about 1.7% is met. Whether the cost savings are structural can only be judged once 2027 guidance is published.
