Aehr Test Systems (AEHR) Q1 FY2027: Backlog Drives Record Revenue, 47.5% Margin

Summary
Aehr Test Systems posted record Q1 FY2027 revenue of $33.0 million, up 200%, with a 47.5% gross margin and backlog of $100.9 million, and raised its outlook to $150 million.
Aehr Test Systems (AEHR) reported record fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue in an 8-K earnings release and conference call on November 2, 2026, covering the quarter from June 27 to September 25, 2026 [1][2]. Both order conversion and margins came in ahead of the prior baseline. The earlier research asked three questions: whether the order backlog could turn into revenue each quarter and be replenished, whether higher shipments could lift gross margin back above 40%, and whether consumables revenue could stop falling as silicon carbide orders and AI installations returned. This quarter confirmed the first two, and the company raised its full-year revenue outlook to $150 million [1]. The consumables trend points in a positive direction, but contactor revenue on the original reporting basis has not been disclosed, so the size of the recovery cannot be verified. Profit has not yet turned into cash, and operating cash flow was still negative [1].
Aehr makes semiconductor burn-in test equipment, which uses high temperature and voltage to make chips with early defects fail before they reach customers. Its wafer-level FOX systems use WaferPak contactors custom-built for each chip design, and its package-level Sonoma systems serve AI processors; system revenue is recognized once, and customers buy new contactors with each new chip generation [3]. In fiscal 2026, Aehr reported revenue of $50.001 million and a gross margin of 35.3% [4][5].
Backlog converted into record revenue and was replenished
First-quarter revenue was $33.007 million, up 200% year over year and 75% sequentially [1]. The prior-year quarter was the three months ended August 29, 2025, offset from the current period by about one month; the company considers the two periods comparable [1]. Revenue exceeded the earlier consensus estimate of about $26.15 million and the roughly $32.5 million per quarter implied by the low end of the previous guidance range.
New orders lifted the backlog even as shipments drew it down. Bookings were $46.7 million in the quarter, a book-to-bill ratio of about 1.4, and backlog reached $100.9 million on September 25, 2026, up from $80.6 million on May 29, 2026 [1][6]. Orders also came from a wider set of customers. The lead hyperscale customer's second AI processor completed qualification on Sonoma and generated follow-on orders, a silicon photonics customer placed additional production orders, and silicon carbide demand improved [1][2]. These results rule out the concern that low revenue was only a scheduling issue, and they show no sign of weakening demand.
The full-year outlook sets a higher bar for later quarters. At $150 million, the remaining three quarters need to average about $39 million each, and effective backlog stood at $109.3 million on November 1, 2026 [1]. Management said demand is front-loaded and that the fourth quarter may be the highest of the year [2]. Bookings in the one-month transition period were not reported separately, so the source of about $6.6 million of the backlog change can only be inferred.
Higher volume pushed gross margin to 47.5% and operating income turned positive
GAAP gross margin was 47.5% in the first quarter, above 40.6% in fiscal 2025 and 35.3% in fiscal 2026 [1][5]. Operating expenses were $9.616 million, only $0.39 million more than in the prior quarter, or 29.1% of revenue. Operating income was $6.047 million, compared with an operating loss of $1.206 million in the prior quarter [1]. On a sequential basis, about 51% of the incremental revenue became operating income. The company guides fiscal 2027 non-GAAP net income to at least 20% of revenue; the first-quarter figure was 28.3% [1].
The margin gain has two sources that the disclosures do not separate. One is higher shipment volume spreading fixed costs. The other is mix: consumables made up 41% of revenue, compared with 24% in the prior-year quarter [2]. Management said Aehr is not currently supply-limited and is pre-purchasing long-lead components; it did not flag tariffs or component price increases as a drag on gross margin [2]. The consumables share may fall as large system shipments ramp, so this quarter's gross margin may not hold.
Conclusion
This report strengthens the case for Aehr's growth and profit conversion. The backlog turned into revenue on schedule and was replenished, and higher volume clearly improved both gross margin and the expense ratio, leaving the operating model's parameters better than before. Cash generation has not yet followed: accounts receivable rose by $10.686 million and inventories by $9.037 million, operating cash flow was negative $3.054 million, and cash and cash equivalents plus restricted cash ended the quarter at $105.1 million [1].
Later evidence will decide whether this view holds. The next quarter tests whether revenue approaches $39 million, whether backlog stays above $100 million, and whether gross margin holds as system shipments grow. A major AI accelerator supplier has decided to buy a FOX-XP test cell for a high-volume production evaluation at an OSAT partner in Taiwan in early calendar 2027, with a decision on high-volume production expected several months after installation [1]. For consumables, contactor revenue by product category and the shipment of silicon carbide orders remain to be confirmed [2].
