Summary

MSCI proposes moving Indonesia to Standalone status, which could force fund selling of Indofood and squeeze First Pacific's quoted-price NAV and dollar earnings.

On October 15, 2026, Bloomberg reported that MSCI had opened a consultation on moving Indonesia from Emerging Market to Standalone status. The MSCI Indonesia standalone proposal could force funds that track emerging-market indexes to sell Indonesian stocks, and companies holding Indonesian assets could be hit as well. [1]

MSCI's timetable: feedback closes on April 30, 2027, and a decision is due by June 30, 2027. [2] In June this year, MSCI had already warned it could downgrade Indonesia to frontier status over investability concerns. [3]

On October 16, the Jakarta Composite Index fell 8.01% to 5,393.92. [2]

UBS estimates the change could drive about $4 billion of passive outflows and up to about $15 billion of active outflows. [4] Foreign investors have already net sold $4.7 billion of Indonesian stocks this year. [4]

The rupiah traded at 18,070 per dollar, close to its record low of 18,190, and Indonesian equities are down nearly 40% this year. [5]

The US-listed ADR of Telkom Indonesia (TLK) closed at $11.03 on October 16, down 13.7%, on volume about nine times its normal level. [6]

Background: how MSCI index status drives fund flows

MSCI is an index provider that sorts national markets into groups such as developed, emerging and frontier; a large pool of global money tracks those indexes.

Passive funds hold an index's constituents at its weights; when a stock leaves the index, they must sell it. Many active funds also benchmark against the MSCI Emerging Markets Index and usually cut holdings too.

Standalone status sits outside all of those groups. Under the proposal, Indonesian constituents would leave MSCI's emerging-market standard and small-cap indexes, turning the money that tracks those indexes into forced sellers.

A holding company mainly owns stakes in other companies; its value is largely those stakes' market value minus head-office debt.

From index reclassification to a Hong Kong holding company's NAV

Step one: if MSCI confirms the proposal by June 30, 2027, Indonesian constituents would be removed from its emerging-market indexes, and tracking funds would need to sell.

Step two: the selling would land on companies still in the MSCI Indonesia index, including food group Indofood Sukses Makmur (INDF). In February this year, MSCI moved it from its Standard index to its Small Cap index, so it remains a constituent. [7]

Step three: foreign investors who sell convert rupiah into dollars, which could keep pressure on the currency.

Step four: the pressure reaches Hong Kong-listed First Pacific. It owns 50.1% of Indofood and values that stake at Indofood's quoted share price. [8] When Indofood's share price falls, First Pacific's net asset value falls with it.

Step five: a weaker rupiah shrinks the dollar value of Indofood's contribution. Because 77% of Indofood's debt is in foreign currencies, a falling rupiah also creates non-cash foreign-exchange losses. [8]

Step six: First Pacific carries about $1.34 billion of head-office net debt, which amplifies any change in asset value at the equity level. [8]

Price moves so far: First Pacific fell 1.3% on October 15 and 0.3% on October 16. [9]

Companies that could be affected

First Pacific (00142.HK) is a Hong Kong-listed investment holding company whose main assets are in Indonesia and the Philippines.

Indofood is its largest asset. At the end of 2024, the stake was worth about $2.09 billion at market price, 52.6% of First Pacific's $3.98 billion adjusted NAV. [8] In 2024, Indofood contributed $333.3 million, or 42.9% of First Pacific's $776.5 million total contribution from operations. [8]

On estimates built from these figures, every 10% fall in Indofood's dollar share price would cut the stake's value by about $209 million, about 5.3% of adjusted NAV and about 8% of First Pacific's market value of roughly $2.65 billion. [8][9]

Currency is the second channel. First Pacific discloses in its annual report that each 1% move in the rupiah changes adjusted NAV by about $20.9 million. [8] On estimates, each 1% rupiah depreciation trims contribution from operations by about 0.43%, or roughly $3.3 million. In 2024, a rupiah fall of only about 5% produced a non-cash foreign-exchange loss of 2.3 trillion rupiah (about $144 million) at Indofood. [8] In the first half of 2026, weaker currencies had already weighed on First Pacific's translated contributions. [10]

The line items that could come under pressure are the Indofood line in NAV, recurring profit and foreign-exchange gains and losses. First Pacific is listed in Hong Kong and sits outside this pool of forced selling, so changes in Indofood's share price and the rupiah show up only when it next discloses its NAV.

Two limits apply. Part of First Pacific's share price already moves with Indonesian equities and the rupiah, so this is not a fully independent effect. And Indofood has had some defensive appeal among foreign investors and may fall less; it depends on how the stock trades through this selling.

What to watch

First, prices. From October 16 to 30, if Indofood and its subsidiary Indofood CBP (ICBP) fall with the Jakarta market while First Pacific's share price barely moves, the gap between them widens. Whether the rupiah breaks through its 18,190 record low is another signal. [5]

Indofood's nine-month 2026 results, due around the end of October, will show whether the non-cash foreign-exchange loss on its foreign-currency debt grew from the first half.

First Pacific's full-year 2026 results, around March 2027, will show whether the Indofood NAV line fell and currency dragged on recurring profit. Concentrated passive selling would come only after MSCI's decision by June 30, 2027, when the follow-on index change is implemented.

The chain would break if: Indonesia introduces free-float and transparency reforms and MSCI withdraws or softens the proposal before deciding; Indofood's dollar share price holds flat or rises during the consultation; the rupiah recovers decisively from around 18,000; or Indofood is no longer an MSCI constituent at the relevant index review, so passive selling never reaches it.

This only helps you spot transmission chains that may be overlooked. It is not a stock recommendation.
