The company operates through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Bankwell Bank, which provides traditional banking services to individual and commercial customers primarily in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Originally known as BNC Financial Group, Inc., the company rebranded to Bankwell Financial Group in 2013 and went public in 2010. With approximately $3.3 billion in total assets as of late 2024, Bankwell has established itself as a community-focused financial institution serving one of the wealthiest regions in the United States.
