Target (TGT) AI Wish Lists Lift Back-to-School Page Conversion Nearly 20%
Target said AI teacher and college wish lists lifted back-to-school page conversion nearly 20%, without translating it into a sales figure.
Target Corporation (TGT) said on its 2026-08-19 earnings call that AI-generated teacher and college wish lists lifted conversion on key back-to-school pages by nearly 20%. The company did not translate the feature into any sales figure [1].
Target is a large US discount department store chain, selling apparel, home goods, toys and food through stores nationwide alongside its own website and app, with most online orders shipped from nearby stores or delivered same day. Net sales grew 5.3% year over year in the second quarter, the fastest in eleven quarters [2].
Two kinds of AI application
The first sits inside the shopping flow: the system automatically builds wish lists from a teacher's classroom needs or an incoming college student's move-in list, and the app home screen is personalized per shopper.
The second is external entry points. Target is among the first retailers to connect agentic shopping through platforms including OpenAI and Google Gemini, so users who mention relevant products inside those assistants are routed to Target.
The results are all on the usage side
Wish list creation grew more than 50% year over year, items added to those lists more than doubled, and conversion on key back-to-school pages rose nearly 20% [1]. The company also said digital traffic from external AI platforms is growing more than three and a half times the rate of the industry.
None of this connects to an amount. Wish list creation and items added are usage counts, and the 20% is a conversion rate on one page category. Neither has been applied to the quarter's sales base [2].
The quarter's growth was itself a broad traffic recovery: comparable sales grew 3.8%, with traffic up 3.6% and average ticket roughly flat, stores up 2.7% and digital up 8.7% [2]. A more direct explanation sits in the same passage of remarks. Before mentioning wish lists, management said 95% of back-to-school supplies were priced at or below last year, and afterwards said more than 10,000 items had been reduced in price over the past twelve months [1]. How much of the conversion lift came from AI recommendations and how much from lower prices is not separated. Management also acknowledged that traffic volume from agentic channels is still small in absolute terms.
Peers have gone further
The approach already exists among Target's real competitors, and one of them quantified it better. Costco disclosed a quarter earlier that conversion in personalized product recommendation slots runs at three times the normal rate and directly drove close to USD 500 million in online sales, a version stated in money. Best Buy has also made its OpenAI and Google partnerships public [3]. Target gave ratios rather than an amount [3].
What is established
Target attached specific numbers to a customer-facing AI feature for the first time and appointed a chief AI officer this quarter, which indicates continued investment in the area.
Whether the lift represents incremental demand is not established. Wish lists route customers to particular pages where conversion is then higher, which may simply relocate purchases that would have happened elsewhere; no analyst pressed the point on the call. Full-year capital expenditure is explicitly directed at stores, remodels and supply chain, with none allocated to AI, and the application remains early.
